Hi all,

I need your recommendations for a good tailor in the Winston-Salem area.

In addition to my suit alteration needs, I have an unusual request that I think would prove challenging to most tailors. I have a very nice Abercrombie & Fitch cashmere sweater that fits me perfectly, but of course, has an embroidered logo prominently displayed on the chest. Would it be possible to have a tailor remove this logo without damaging the sweater?

A quick google search listed the below tailors. Do you have positive experiences with any of them?

I have trie to do what the OP is suggesting (with cotton sport shirts and knit polo shirts) on several occassions and the results have proven far from perfect and in two cases, were wholly unacceptable. My wife is not a professional tailor, but is a fairly accomplished seamstress; she has made a lot of her clothes, made me a couple of items and frequently crafts clothing items for the grandkids. She is the one who has removed such logos, at my request. At best, we could always see where the logo had been! Good luck in your efforts, demondeac. ;)

I have had embroidered logos removed from 3 different items of clothing with very good results. However, these were removed from fabrics that were much more durable than cashmere. One was a denim jacket, one was one of those jackets with a nylon shell and fleece lining, and one was a cotton OCBD. Not sure how it will work on cashmere, but here's what you can do:

Embroidery shops use a tool that is like a small beard trimmer - Video Here

Contact some local embroidery shops and see what they think about removing the embroidery from cashmere. The jackets I had done only cost $10 each for large logos across the entire back, and the OCBD was only $5 for a small logo on the pocket. Unless you knew it was there and were looking very close, it's near impossible to tell there was anything embroidered on them. The key is having a stabilizer under the embroidery (most of them do). Since it's a more delicate material, I'm just not sure what the appearance of the cashmere will be after removal; if there seems to be some distortion, you (or a tailor/cleaner) could try lightly steaming the area to relax the fibers and get them back into shape. Alternately, a hand wash and block dry might also get the threads to return to their original shape. Could be worth a shot.

Good luck, and let us know how it turns out.
