Bedale

 

What are you looking for? I recently bought a Bedale after first looking at the Ashby. I wanted something more fitted than the Beaufort, was mostly wearing it in the city and got an overcoat for winter wear. But if I was going to be outdoors a lot --- hiking, hunting, fishing, etc. --- I might have gone with the Beaufort instead. I hear the large back pocket comes in extremely handy. Also the Beafort is long enough to be worn over a suit jacket; that wasn't an issue for me.

You can't really go wrong. The Bedale met my needs. What best fits yours?

 

I like Beaufort's length but it looks a bit baggy in the back.

 

I have a Bedale and like it quite a bit. I would never get rid of it but would happily welcome a Beaufort to the mix and rotate.

Yes the cuffs are different and overal the fit is trimmer.

 

I find the tear away cuffs of the Beaufort to be quite annoying and hard to manage compared to the knit cuffs of the .

 

I prefer the added length on the Beaufort.....it helps keep the rain off your butt and that's what it's all about!

 

I must warn you that the Beaufort ( I own the Classic oiled model and also the waxed version ) is solely a jacked for wearing outdoors . It is too hot to wear inside a heated building such as a museum and too heavy to schlep around with you . I only wear mine while outside or leave it inside the Rolls-Royce before entering a heated building .

 

Beaufort covers most suits. Not sure about the Bedale.

 

Bedale also has rib knitted cuffs. Probably can't wear it over a suit jacket.

I wear my Beaufort over sports coat all of the time, that's why the type of sleeves and length are ideal for me.

Back when we were Hoosiers, I did as Oldsport describes in the post above. Down here it just never gets cold enough to justify that kind of layering.

 

Wait, a Beaufort, without a liner, is heavy? Heavier than a trench coat? I totally disagree. Are you sure you bought a Beaufort?

 

Yes it does have a heft to it. I don't own any trench coats to comment on that but it's definitely heavier than my cashmere blend top coat.

I'm not sure what model jacket I have, but it's shorter, like the Bedale, and I like it because it's easy to get in and out of the car because I'm not sitting on the extra length. To support an earlier comment, it's got some weight to it, and is probably heavier than my 3/4-length trench coat.

 

I own both... Hardly ever get a chance to wear either of them.

 

Quickly scrolled through as I recently joined the Barbour ranks - but I feel a bit like I landed in the Twilight Zone.

1) Barbour coats over a suit? :crazy:
2) A waxed cotton coat being too heavy?

I've been very happy with my purchase. But yes all the hardware and extra pockets does make it heavy. And nothing is wrong with that. it's a quality made item.

 

I have worn mine (with liner and heavy sweater) in the Arctic but for the most part it just keeps the rain off. And I would never wear one over a worsted suit! Ewwww . . .

Over tweed is another question all together. Definitely over tweed.

 

I know it's a pretty old thread but could you pls post sizes for those two jackets?
Both look great on you btw -- actually among the best fit pictures one can find on google.

I had several none of which left wax on anything. On the other hand, I never had a car with cream leather interior.

I guess luxury comes with a price.
