What tie with a tweed suit?

The question is asked not in terms of color, but rather in terms of fabric, weave, and texture. I think of a tweed suit as being a bit more casual (or for a "country" suit) and so the idea of a typical "work" tie of woven/printed silk in a smooth texture seems like it doesn't match.

Am I off base here? If not, what type of tie pairs best with a tweed suit (not sportcoat)? Silk grenadine? Wool? Something else?

Wool or wool/silk blends are what I would think of, but I don't know if there is an official "rule" for the subject.

Grenadine is a too dressy. A silk knit or wool tie matches the relaxed look of a tweed suit. Many people, however, recommend printed silk to contrast with the rough tweed. Ties with images of game are classic for hunting in a tweed suit. Paisley is also a common tie to wear with tweed.

Many choices. Silk or wool. Striped silk rep, gum silk paisley, wool challis, silk knit, even wool tweed! And a country suit it is! Even if you wear it in the city.

I personally a striped tie in a heavyweight ribbed silk, strong dominant colors preferred (scarlet, hunter green, or navy goes especially well). Something with some gravitas that holds a nice chunky knot.

I think repp ties qualify well for tweeds, but realize that our more traditionalist members may advise differently... and quite likely call me a "cheeky bounder" in the process. :icon_smile_wink:
