new guy here, not really up to par on the whole fashion side of things when it comes to suits and more formal clothing.....

anyways, im goign to wedding in a couple weeks, and I picked out a nice black-ish suit with grey pinstripes, and wanted to wear a purple shirt, or something violet, and my question was what color tie would make this stand out. its a summer wedding, 26 year old couple, so I'm looking for something that is bold and loud, but still works together with a purple shirt. Thanks

Welcome.

Normally a black suit isn't worn to weddings. Your's has a gray pin strip which may make it more acceptable.

That's a strong shirt color, but since a wedding is festive it might work.

Linked from the Home Page is a series of articles on color and pattern coordination:

I'd look for a necktie that has some of the same color as the shirt and then you can go with some of the colors suggested by the color wheel - see the articles.

Also you can download a program called ieSpell to check your spelling and grammar. I use it all the time since image is important!

What color tie will make a violet shirt stand out against a black pinstriped suit??? Good lord, man, any color tie will make such a combination stand out. The question is what color tie could tame it to make it not look like a costume.

Maybe you mean a pale lavendar shirt and a charcoal gray suit?

Welcome to the forum.

I agree with Birdman. You don't need to make that outfit "pop" with an obnoxious tie choice.

Charcoal, lavender, and a navy repp might work...

I have a lavender oxford but I've never worn it with a suit.

its a very faint purple, from far it almost looks white, and the suit is more of a grayer black, i guess that would be charcoal? its not jet black and I've tried it on with the shirt, and I don't notice anything to outrageous or costume-y
Well that's all a relief! When people say a shirt is purple or (especially) violet, the tendency is to think of PURPLE... like Grimace from the McDonald's advertisements, or Barney the dinosaur (yes, I have a toddler at home).

Since things are more subdued, you've got some choices. A darker purple tie might work, as might a solid navy, if you're a high-contrast guy (dark/strong features and hair). So might a silver tie, particularly if your hair and features are lighter. More interesting, IMO, would be dark ties with lavendar or purple spots or stripes. A basketweave of silver, lavendar, and pale blue might be fetching, and particularly well-suited to a wedding. A minty, pale green would be a more daring approach.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with pale lavender as a shirt colour - congratulations on choosing something interesting!

Your suit sounds like it is very dark grey, rather than black. That suit, with its paler pinstripe, would regularly be worn in the UK with your colour shirt.

Because the suit is almost plain and the shirt is plain and relatively pale you have every choice going. I don't myself go for striped ties particularly. A pattern where the background is grey and the pattern is purple would be fine. Ditto a purple background and grey pattern, although your purple tie would have to look well with the lavender of your shirt. A typical wedding tie would have a very pale background and a less pale but still muted pattern - if you could find something with your lavender colour as part of the pattern that would look very nice.

Otherwise, you could wear a plain colour. If so then texture would help make the look festive. Try grenadine for a good look - match the colour of the pinstripe and let the shirt be background. Or go for violet. A grey herringbone would also work. The suggestions above are also good, although minty green depends, in my view, on your complexion. It makes me look as if I am sickening for something.

Depending how dressy the wedding is you could also stick a sprig of freesia in your buttonhole, match up the purple and pick up the yellow in the tie. That is a lot bolder and I wouldn't do it unless you were certain it worked and that the you weren't the only person other than the groom wearing a flower :).

With a lavender shirt and charcoal pinstripe suit you have a very large color/patern pallet open to you. What's your hair color and eye color? Those could be picked up with a minor color in the tie. Some shade of red, blue, or even an opposite like yellow could work as a body color with minor colors that pickup the color of your suit, hair, or eyes. For example a pink tie with lavender stripes. A red tie with a yellow pattern and lavender accents (I have a Robert Tallbot Best of Class tie like that), a rasberry - light blue - silver - black combo. Just about anything.

I do not have any hair, I "bic" it once a week and will probably do so the day before the wedding and I have brown eyes. I liked the pale green choice that was recommended, and my attitude is a bit more on the daring side when it comes to fashion, so I will try it on with the shirt, and let you know what I end up choosing. Thanks again.

Dark purple tie, ideally with a pattern; Duchamp tie like this,

Normally a black suit isn't worn to weddings. Your's has a gray pin strip which may make it more acceptable.
I attended a wedding recently and most men were wearing plain black suits, dark grey (normally with fine pinstripes) were the second msot popular choice.

I have a lavender shirt, and I often pair it with a darker purple tie. Wearing purple speaks for itself, so you don't necessarily need a bold pattern in the tie. My purple tie is a conservative striped tie, and I find that it works well combined with the lavender shirt.

Darker purple . . .

. . . in a paisley or other pattern would probably look well against lilac or lavender. A rich, plain cream might also.

Go to Filenes' Basement, Back Bay, and see what pops up. Take the shirt, of course, and also the trimmings from the trouser alteration, if you still have them. That's yet another reason for keeping the things besides reweaving. You can color-match a suit without wearing it or lugging it with you:icon_smile_wink:

Confused?I thought that a black suit is acceptable for both weddings and funerals.
Not traditionally. Black is for mourning and for evening. Wearing it to a wedding - especially a daytime wedding - sends, it is supposed, a signal of great sadness, rather than joy, over the marriage. A jilted suitor, or fiercely opposed mother-in-law, for instance, might wear black.

However, so few people know the traditional practice and thinking on this point that the only signal sent by wearing a black suit is that you are not one of those few.
