What color socks are you suppposed to wear with Jeans? If socks are supposed to match your pants, do you sport blue socks?

Ha ha! Nice socks.

Seriously, I don't wear white socks unless I'm wearing sneakers/tennis shoes, and if I'm doing that I'm playing sports.

I lived in Europe for a number of years and one of the sure ways to spot someone of poor dress style was if they were wearing white socks. Usually they were American or Japanese tourists, who I believe are the worst dressers on the planet. It is soooo easy to spot an American abroad! That said, I'll wear just about any color sock but white. The general rule of thumb for business or formal dress is to wear socks that are the same color as your trousers; that makes the appearance of the leg seem as long as possible and only stop at the foot (shoe).

When I was in the Army there was a lot of good natured (and sometimes not so good natured) ribbing between the bro's and the crackers. We crackers always, "Drank Bud, smoked Marlboros and wore white socks." The Bro's drank the Bull, smoked Kools and couldn't shave because of ingrown hairs. Anyway, I've never been able to wear white socks with jeans ever since. And that was 1980. I like a pale yellow sock. Not too bright but just yellow enough not to be white...you cracker mother...

IMO, NEVER wear white sox unless your wearing gym sneaks and sweats/shorts or you've got some kind of street cred or street style. That's different. Outside of that, it just doesn't look that good. Period.

Unlike socks with dressier clothes, match or complement the jeans OR shoes. One can really get away with complementing either.

Don't forget, dressier socks are more smooth and refined and casual socks are thicker / busier.

It looks terrible (IMO) when people wear dress socks (or white socks) with moc style / Timberland style shoes and jeans.

I like a crew style sock with jeans and shoes.

Finally, if you have to wear white sox, please don't wear sox that go higher than your ankle (unless you are a pro basketball player).

A trad never wears socks with jeans. If you must wear jeans they should only be Levi's 501s -- and then you wear boat shoes sans socks.
Certainly during the day, fine. But there are many occasions at night (i.e. going to a club) when jeans are acceptable but going without socks is not. Now perhaps some uber-trad would never ever go to a club (even if invited by a friend, which is the only time I go) and thus avoid the situation altogether, but for those of us who wish to wear jeans in at least semi-formal environments, you have to wear socks sometimes.

And you don't wear argyles to a club, either.

The only time I feel OK going with no socks at night is in my own home or the home of a family member. Maybe this is my problem

In Essex here in the UK we still shrink from the white sock. It became one of the hated motifs of 'Essex Boy' of the 1980s.

With Jeans, is not the fabric of the sock at least as important as the colour? The sock should be suitably casual IMO. Perhaps the exception is in the evening with a pair of jeans for going out when the sock should be darkish and more formal - perhaps a dark Pantherella.

...and boots in winter, surely? - which solves the sock problem.
