To the naked eye, the background trouser fabric color is warmer than it appears here; more reminiscent of fresh-ground coffee. Occasion is an after-six gallery opening. Thanks.

GRH, if the Donegal trousers were lighter, and more contrasting, like a dark tan/very light brown, or light/medium gray, they would be a better option.

Do you have light or medium gray worsteds or flannels? Or tan wool dress trousers? They are always a great combo w/ the navy blazer, of course.
This.

Or wear them with a light colour jacket. Perhaps a camel SC.

Thanks for your thoughtful comments, gentlemen. Yes, of course, the texture issue! Here's what I wound up with. Black corduroy RL jacket; micro-tattersall BB tab-collar shirt; ancient (in every sense) BB tie, the dark background of which reads as black to the human eye. And "oxblood" penny loafers, too old for me to read the label.

Ah, the camel! Let me see what's lurking in the closet. Thanks again.
I don't know how Flairball feels, but me--I'm always happy to help a guy from the great Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania! My father was born there in 1919. And in 1946, my dad's uncle, Uncle N____, was arrested in the Fort Pitt Hotel in Pittsburgh after having been indicted by that city's grand jury on charges of illegal off-track bookmaking. In fact, Uncle N_____ was one of the Pittsburgh area's most notorious bookies in the 1940s. In reporting his arrest the following day, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette characterized my dad's uncle as "the biggest fish" in the dragnet that had swept up a bunch of racketeers.

Unfortunately, I don't know what Uncle N_____ was wearing at the time of his arrest. He did manage to avoid the striped pajamas by pleading guilty, paying a fine, and going on probation. Afterwards, he stayed out of trouble: he went straight--or at least took better care not to get caught again. He died in Florida in 1981.

Uncle N_____'s son didn't fare as well. He went to prison in the 1980s after his career as head of a major cocaine smuggling and distribution operation in the Pittsburgh area was abruptly interrupted by the authorities.

To balance things out, I'm glad to say that my father and his four brothers, who were also born in Pittsburgh, served honorably in World War II and went on to lead honest, productive lives. Further, I still have a ton of relatives in the Beaver Falls/Pittsburgh area, all of whom are law-abiding, ethical people. Of my many relatives, it was just Uncle N____ and his son who stirred up mischief in your part of the country.

That cocaine thing? Sorry about that, GRH.

No apologies necessary. Thanks for the story. On this side of the tracks the burg is looking pretty civilized these days: good food; the occasional spot of culture; economy based on meds, eds, tech, financial services.

Meanwhile, somewhere north of the Arctic Circle, foppish scientist sports some kind of tweedish trousers with (presumably blue) blazer. Cuffs, probably 1.5", visible in one or two scenes. ("The Thing," 1951)
