I would second what Base615 says and take it one step further. Skip your regular hardware store woods, and find a place to source some more exotic woods. I used to use a place when I was in Oklahoma (I think it was Woodcraft) to get exotic woods for knife handles. But if you do this piece in something like bocote, will REALLY catch the eyes, and hopefully impress anyone you might have over.

Most places like this will have smaller cuts, end pieces, etc, if you wanted to get multiple woods for the project without investing in whole planks. If they do'nt, ask them there if they have any regular customers (possibly a cabinetmaker) who might buy whole planks but have smaller leftover pieces from their work that they'd let you have.

www.woodfinder.com can be useful to find a local source for exotic woods.
