Tie storage as art

Does anyone know where I can get a wall-mountable wooden shelf thing for storing rolled ties? I envision something unusual and modern that would look almost like art when filled with ties. Preferably not just a x-by-x grid; I'm thinking something more artsy.

Why not build it yourself? It's pretty fun building something as a project. Design what you want and go to a hardware shop and get them to cut your preferred wood to your specs. once cut, building the thing should be pretty easy and much more satisfying than buying it.

Now if I only knew how to sew...

Cheers,

Craig

I would second what Base615 says and take it one step further. Skip your regular hardware store woods, and find a place to source some more exotic woods. I used to use a place when I was in Oklahoma (I think it was Woodcraft) to get exotic woods for knife handles. But if you do this piece in something like bocote, will REALLY catch the eyes, and hopefully impress anyone you might have over. :) Most places like this will have smaller cuts, end pieces, etc, if you wanted to get multiple woods for the project without investing in whole planks. If they do'nt, ask them there if they have any regular customers (possibly a cabinetmaker) who might buy whole planks but have smaller leftover pieces from their work that they'd let you have.

Sites like www.woodfinder.com can be useful to find a local source for exotic woods.

Agreed. I store my ties in homemade cedar boxes. I'm not sure you can build anything easier than a box.

Tie Storage on Apartment Therapy

I saw a home tour on Apartment Therapy, a great resource blog for apartment dwellers (https://apartmenttherapy.com) where a gentleman had put up a simple wall mounted shelf upon which he placed his rolled up ties in clear boxes that looked like they were made for the purpose. I thought it was pretty cool and it was a nice way to both store and show off a tie collection.

Purpose-made sounds expensive, the clear plexiglass cubes for storing home run baseballs would work perfectly I think.

I think unfinished cedar boxes, or cedar storage tray, are the way to go. I'm not sure I'd want my nice ties rubbing up against a stain or varnish.

Another option would be to go very old-school and make a storage box out of white oak (quarter-sawn is particularly beautiful) then fume it with ammonia. It's a somewhat hazardous and long process, but the results are a finish that looks stained but doesn't use any chemicals that can leech into your nice silk. The only byproduct is concentrated ammonia that can be diluted into high-nitrogen fertilizer when you're done with it.

Thank you, great suggestions from everyone. I will check out exotic wood near me, talk to some local craftsmen, and see if I can come up with a way to make this happen. I can see it in my head, so hopefully translating that to a finished product is manageable.
