At one point I remember calling around to all the tailors listed in the yellow pages, asking for prices on basic services, and if they did some slightly more custom/skilled services. I am pretty sure Alpine was on the expensive side. Perhaps she raised her prices.

By all means, try them and report back.

Monetti tailoring

In reply to those who feel Monetti tailoring is
expensive & it takes too long to get your clothes back. Gino is a master tailor. He can build you a custom suit. Though he chooses not to do that anymore because it does take too much time. Please remember being a master tailor costs a lot of money. It's like seeing a specialist. Since he is that good, many people are going to take their things to him. So when he tells you 2 weeks, I'm sure he means it, but then he'll get people coming in after you & paying him more to do rush orders. As far as his prices, as I said you are paying for his experience, but also his overhead. He has other tailors he has to pay, the rent of the building & materials. And, isn't it nice that he has 2 changing rooms & a bathroom you can use.

Top Tailoring

Check out Top Tailoring on 658 S Gammon Rd (Gammon Place - little strip mall) near Woodmans on West Side. The owner, Lana, has been doing custom clothing and alterations her whole life. She is originally from Europe, and has an absolute eye for quality and fashion. The prices are very reasonable for the quality you will get. I never heard anyone complain about her work.

Does anyone remember Crazy Mary's Leatherie on Williamson St. (very near the HQ of our local quasi-respectable motorcycle club)? She did repairs and alterations at prices which made me feel like a thief. The same at Abe's Shoe Repair on Regent St. If the shoes or boots weren't worth repairing, he'd shake his head and refuse to take them. I once stopped in when passing and had him sew my belt loop back together. It took him 5 seconds and he showed me the door when I tried to pay him for it.

I took an Oxxford jacket to him, to have 'surgeon's cuffs' made (so they'd match up with my other Oxxford jackets). The job was not done quickly, was quite expensive, and was fairly crudely machine-stitched, nowhere near the quality provided by the manufacturer.

Had I known he was a master tailor, I'd have been really unhappy with the job. I have to allow for some waist expansion in a jacket, but it is NOT going to darken his door. If I find someone I will post the name and a report.

While I quite like Mr. Monetti personally, I didn't really have a great experience the last time with alterations (he didn't do them personally, but I know he saw the finished product and could have addressed it then and there) so I've moved on. Alpine Tailor on Monroe has been discussed previously, she's also very nice, and service isn't quick, but I've taken a number of suits (4-5) there over that past year, with a laundry list of requests (I'm very specific with her as to my instructions) and I've been very pleased. The list has included trouser length, waist suppression (I lost weight), sleeves, and even narrowing a pair of pants (that last one was an experiment on my part, and the quality was fine - I'll take the blame for the mediocre result!). There's a relatively new place in the basement of Hilldale thats seeing a lot of business, but I haven't used them for anything but hems. Last, my neighbor reports good service from some place near the new HyVee on Whitney Way, but I don't recall the name. PM me if you need me to find it.

Instead of starting a new thread, I'll try to revive this one. Does anyone have any experience withLucca Fine Men's Clothing and Custom Tailoring in Madison, either good or bad, either with clothing purchases or tailoring?
It was formerly Bill Paul (out of Neenah). Dar Boyer (sp?) who worked there I think now owns the place. Haven't shopped there in 10+ years, but they used to carry higher end RTW stuff like Canali. I didn't have the best experience previously and thus moved on, so I'm going to limit additional comments about the current store. But I can absolutely say I rely on the Forum much more as a "go to" source for trusted opinions on style/cut/pretty much anything involving non-casual dress clothing. For my suiting I've used either BB (Chicago - the Rookery) or custom (Gordon Yao, who comes through Chicago twice a year). I'm not much at all for more expensive casual clothing (I lean either really casual or athletic tech wear outside of work). If I'm really in a pinch in Madison for "nicer" casual I like the folks at Jazzman on State St., so I shop there. And of course there's Context on King, which is a super knowledgable and hard core denim spot. I think they're great (and pricey).
