I'm looking at this Filson #252 leather field satchel on . (Here it is new on .) The used one has some scratches and other signs of wear. I'm assuming that a decent leather person could fix this up pretty readily, but I'd like to hear from others who have experience with this type of repair. What would it cost and how close to "new" could they get it? Would you spend $300-$400 on an $800 retail bag in this condition? It looks like a deal to me, and I'm tempted to buy it.
Thanks and happy new year!
I've actually bought one in similar condition. It's great.
There's no need to let a decent leather person near it. You just get som saddle soap and some Saphir Renovateur and you are good to go.
First remove the strap and take it apart.
Then scrub the entire bag including the strap with some water and lots of saddle soap, outside and in. Don't rinse. Don't use a lot of water. Wipe it down with a rag, thoroughly. Then apply Reno on the outside. Wait 10 minutes. Brush or polish with cloth. Polish the brass with a soft cloth. Let dry completely, at least 48 hours.
If it has any water damage or cracks on the bottom, apply extra Reno there, repolish.
These bags are better with some mileage.
The scuff marks will be near invisible.
