Hello Gentlemen,

I am inquiring of you fine men this morning concerning the proper size of wool trouser cuffs?

I recently seen where someone commended Jovan for "Stovepipe" cuffs?

I thought it looked very well!

Any thoughts are appreciated.

Thanks!

Watchman:

Don't you own my book yet? Here's what I have there:

CUFFS: Sophisticated men wear cuffs on their pants, and other sophisticated men notice. Cuffs are de rigueur with pleated pants especially suit trousers and look great on casual pants too. They also serve a function of adding extra weight to the bottom allowing the pants to hang better.

Some stores discourage cuffs because it's more expensive for them to put on, so you may have to insist on cuffs. If you're under 5' 10" and you've told that cuffs make you look shorter, ignore that outdated advice, and just have the tailor make the cuff 1 ¼ "instead of the average 1 ½". The same logic makes sense for those of you over 6' - try 1 ¾" cuffs.

If you don't cuff your pants have the tailor slant the bottoms so that the hem is lower at the back to the top of the shoe heel. Tailors call this a "fishtail". Cuffs are hemmed straight across.

Typical are

Very short 1 3/8

Short men 1 1/2"

Average height 1 5/8"

Tall men 1 3/4"

Very tall 2"

EDIT
Andy posted his reply while I was writing this. I defer to his judgement.

^^^Thank you gentlemen!

Andy, I definitely need to pick up your encyclopedia!

These are the responses I'm looking for!

I am 6'2...so, I'm thinking either 1 3/4 or 2 in cuffs.

If you fall into the category of "iGent" then 2" is the standard. I've even seen 3"!
These are ridiculous because the pant leg is too narrow. The cuff should cover 2/3 to 3/4 of the shoe. These barely make it to the vamp.

At your height, 1 3/4" is easily enough. I personally believe 2" to be a bit excessive.
And please be sure the trousers have a bit of a break. The pair in the photo you linked to do not. They are too short.

Also... you might begin to consider pleated trousers. Although they are not part of the (too-small, too-tight) trend of the moment, they are a classic, timeless look.

I plan on getting them with 2' cuffs....

What do you guys think?
2" is overdone for traditional, conservative trousers. 1.5" is the standard and is never wrong for any height or trouser style. That said, I have done 1.75" on a few of my flat front trousers, but would not recommend anything more than that....unless you're aiming for more of an igent vibe (see pic above).

If you want 2" cuffs you are tall enough for them. I have a very good friend about your height who has always worn 2" cuffs and they are fine. If they gave occasion for an opportunity to tease him I would have but they were fine. The big question is whether you should get these ,which are tailored cut, or the regular cut. JAB signature cut is rather standard size which about an 18" leg opening, measured by circumference. The tailored cut will be less. How much less I don't know. If you are a beanpole with a small foot they might be ok, but if you are not a short footed beanpole they might not be. Men's classic clothing is not cut close to the body like women's clothes. This thread on leg openings may be of interest. https://askandyaboutclothes.com/com...hes.com/community/showthread.php?138379-Leg-Opening&highlight=leg+opening+width

So a question for you knowledgable gentlemen. My tailor recently talked me into flat front slacks for the first time. I'm 6'2 and bigger than average. Question is, I LIKE cuffs and have them on all my slacks. Would it look silly or "wrong" to put cuffs on these flat front trousers?

thanks.....
It will not look silly or wrong. Moreover, as it is always correct to keep your jacket buttoned, no one will ever know what front your pants have.

A quick search of AAAC will produce at least a dozen threads on this topic. If you've indeed been perusing this forum for nearly two years, you should know that cuffs are not only acceptable with both pleated and flat front pants, but preferred by most members here. Have you ever looked at the WAYWT thread (eg. upr_crust)? The answer to you question, as I feel you should know by now, is a resounding NO!
