Guys,

I'm in a internet cafe in Tokyo, all I want to say is that I never knew Poole does ready made. From I what saw in Sogo the RM suits are absolutely top notch. Wonder who made them?

I used to live in Tokyo's old garment district, across the street from Kindware.

They make almost all of the formalwear sold at Takashimaya under the label "Social." They also have (or had) the license in Japan for Huntsman. I recall watching a television program that profiled a buyer for Barneys New York in Shinjuku. He paid a visit on a relatively small factory in Osaka to inspect their suits. The television program went to great lengths to put mosaics around the shots of the neighborhood the factory was in.

Regarding the website you mention: I saw some made in Japan labels on suits in the Aquascutum store on Regent Street, London, earlier this year. I asked the sales person how this came about. His answer was that Aquascutum was now under Japanese ownership!

Aquascutum's Japanese parent company is Renown; however, I believe that Kim Winser and the London headquarters now exercise pretty much global control of the brand. This London Times article might be of some interest:

There must surely be good business reasons why the suits are manufactured/tailored in Japan, but these reasons are not self evident such as the use of Hong Kong once, and China etc now. One thing is certain though: it cannot be "cheap" labour.

Henry Poole's has had a very long relationship with Japan, dating back to 1871 when both His Highness Prince Taschimi Mitzumo Miya and His Highness Prince Higashi Fushimino Miya became Poole customers. It was Poole who made the western dress for the first trip a Japanese Crown Prince would take beyond Japan's borders (in 1921). This connection eventually led to the award of the Warrant of the Imperial Household in 1923. More directly related to this thread, in 1964 Henry Poole formalized a longstanding relationship (and licensing agreement) with Japan's oldest retail organization, Matsuzakaya. Moreover, the firm has made some differing forrays into the Japanese marketplace, including a range of Henry Poole accessories and logo items including ties and cufflinks...many of which were designed by the firm's Japanese branch.
