Following my new employment, I intend to make the pilgrimage to J. Press in the near future, thinking about picking up some v-necks a la

can anyone comment on the quality/fit/warmth of these? I am but a novitiate to the ways of Press. Also they seem to have only crew-neck fair isle sweaters, yet I hunger for a vee. Any tips? Is this trad heresy?

Many thanks.

I can't comment specifically on the v-necks to which you link, since I don't own any (yet). But I can certainly attest to the overall high quality of Press's sweaters. I just had a delightfully warm Shaggy Dog on yesterday--a fantastic sweater.

In my experience, their sweaters aren't terribly bulky, but they are not slim-fitting either. I find them roomy enough for comfort, without being too roomy.

As to the fair isle vest, my salesman at the local Press informed me that they are actually new-old stock. In fact, I don't even think my local Press has them in the store. The salesman noted with caution that they are crew-necks, not v-necks--which he found odd. Still, I like the look of the vest and may pick one up.

There is certainly nothing un-trad about a v-neck fair isle. In fact, Lands End has one on sale that is pretty cheap and may sway me away from the Press crew neck:

I can also attest to the quality. I actually have their v-neck in cashmere as well as wool cardigans. The only time that I was disappointed was for one of their cotton materials but that is a side issue.

I've got several Press sweaters and they are all of fantastic quality. I picked up the fair isle crew neck vest recently, which the salesman at the Madison Ave store said was from Japan. I like it a lot.

I have one of these J. Press v-neck sweaters in merino wool (the navy blue). It's a handsome and dressy sweater that I often wear to my club during the day for lunch or to play bridge when I don't feel like putting on a blazer or sportcoat.

It is a lightweight sweater, which makes it comfortable to wear indoors. In a cool climate, expect to wear a coat or jacket over the sweater when outdoors.

My J. Press experience is different. I bought a cotton V neck a year ago and within 6 months, the seams have started to fall apart. The sizing is correct and not tight. All in all, I have found J. Press's quality too variable for my tastes. If you are in Cambridge, go around the corner to the Andover Shop.
