Is it worth tailoring a cheap suit?

Hello all

I posted recently about restarting my wardrobe, and I bought a couple of Fitzgerald suits at BB and also a cheap medium gray "Lauren" Ralph Lauren suit. The Lauren suit is obviously of a much lesser quality than the others but it's not entirely tragic. I paid 100 dollars for it and the pants are just a smidge too long and the jacket could be taken in just a bit. Is it worth it? Or is it understood that cheap suits don't deserve any tailoring?

Separate question, I am going to back to BB to get two more suits this Friday. Maybe the thinner Milano cut this time around. Do they have a sale around November? I would hate to think that I could have gotten a third suit if I just waited a week or so.

Thanks!

An inexpensive suit that is tailored to fit you perfectly is a better look than a "good"/more expensive suit that provides the purchaser will an ill fit. Let your conscience be your guide. There was a time in many of our lives when the inexpensive suits were our only financially realistic options. The wiser one's among us spent the extra dollars to get the fit that showed the suit(s) at it's/their best! ;)

If you intend to wear the suit then it is worth having it tailored to fit. As others will no doubt agree, it is better to wear a cheap suit that fits well than an expensive one that does not.
+1

I have been fortunate to occasional get a mid-level garment at a stupid close out price and have spent more altering it than I paid for it. All that matters is if the "all-in" price makes sense.

A few years back, I grabbed a J.Crew $525 sport coat for $99 (tucked in the end of the sale's rack, off-season, only one left) and spent +/- $125 altering it and now I have a very decent sport coat for a touch over $200 that has become my go-to sport coat.

Sale Item Purchase Equation:
Buy if: V > P + T
Don't Buy if: V < P + T

V = all in value of garment after tailoring
P = purchase price
T = tailoring costs

The ratio of P to T doesn't matter, just that the sum is less than V

Thanks for the advise. I went to a tailor at lunch today and decided to get it done. 50.00 dollars was not bad at all.

now does anyone know if BB is having a November sale? I am going to grab another two suits this Friday and would like to know if I should hold of another week..

Thanks !

I don't think they will typically have a sale in November. Their friends & family sale is typically in September and the semi annual sale starts after Christmas.

They may run various 2/$xxxx specials in suits and other merchandise but nothing statewide.

I got a card in the mail from BB offering $200 off a $600 purchase good through this weekend. It certainly would not hurt to ask when you visit the store. Thy might make that offer if they thought they could sell another suit.

I received the same card BUT I also received another card giving 25% off any order this weekend. There was a code at the bottom that I can't recall but it doesn't hurt to inquire as to whether they can extend the 25% to your purchase. On 2 brand new suits that may help you more.

No they did not. Got two more Fitzgerald suits for 1800.00 tonight

on another note, I tried the Milano suit on and while the fit was nice around the waist, my arms where bursting out of the sleeves and so was my back. And that was going up a size and then another size.'
