How long should a blazer be?

Hello,

I was wondering how long should be a blazer/sportcoat? I usually like it a little shorter but now I am real worried if I should get a Regular or Long one. How can you determine what is the minimum length of a blazer that would look good on you in a casual outfit (with jeans for example)?

Thanks,
Anastas

I think that sport jackets have a tendency to look "skirty" when worn with jeans, especially close fitting jeans. I have seen jackets that I would consider to be too short for wear with trousers, look fine with jeans. I suppose that if I wore jeans exclusively that I would wear a slightly shorter jacket.

I really don't like that whole jeans with a nasty jacket look. Most often, they are jackets that most of us wouldn't be caught dead in (poor material, construction, style). They are jackets made for the sole purpose of being worn with jeans. They were worn by people who knew nothing as far as proper dress. So many wore jackets too big, small, short etc. Unfortunately, this mindset seems to be infecting suiting and blazer wearing. I doubt though that anyone hear would follow suit.

I like the jeans and jacket look but do not ever wear a "casual" or deconstructed blazer. A well tailored blazer can look good with the right pair of jeans but it can be a tough look to achieve at times.

Back to the original post though, Someone in SAKS once mentioned that a jacket fits properly in length when you can cup the end if it in your hand. What I mean is with your arms relaxed at your side you should be able to grab the jacket and have it fit in the crux of your knuckles. I agree with the above posters but this seems to be a quick and easy guide for me.

You may have found that it works for you but I don't think that, in general, the length of ones arms should dictate the length of their jacket. After all, it's not uncommon for men of the same height to have arm length differences of several inches.

First, I think that covering the buttocks is mandatory. Then there's the matter of over-all balance. Some subscribe to taking the measure from collar seam down to the heel and divide by half to determine where your jacket hem should hit. That may be more usefull as a general guideline, but then if one were particularly long legged, it wouldn't be that helpful.

It needs to cover your seat, or be a little longer. Ignore your hands or curled fingers. I'm 6'0" but I wear a long. From a pure length standpoint, it's possible I could wear a regular. However, there is something about the cut of a long and the relative placement of the buttons that make the long a better overall fit. It's a matter of scale. The regular looks boxy on me, but the long looks elegant.

Also, whatever you buy needs to cover the muzzle of your sidearm. :D

If it helps:

A 44S should have a back center length from the top of the collar of about 31 inches for a traditional length. (Height: less than 5'9"??)

A 44R about 32 1/2 inches. (Height: 5'9"-6' ??)

A 44L about 34 inches. (Height: 6'-6'3" ??)

Slightly shorter for smaller chest sizes, slightly longer for larger chest sizes.

Just general guidelines, subject to correction. If it doesn't help, I apologize for wasting the space.

I have noticed that some trendier sportcoats are noticably shorter. The first one I could think of was J.Crew's chino blazer:

What do you think?
Fits like a woman's length.

This is just too short, looks awful to me but I bet it looks good to some very young men. I believe it you wear it unbuttoned it would look better. I think the jeans/jacket look is confusing, why bother. Now if you want to wear a tweed jacket, an old beat up tweed jacket with jeans, now that might work. Jeans are just not dressy, a jacket dresses things up for me. If I need to stay warm I will wear a sweater or a jacket. I think this whole jeans and jacket look is fine for guys at college, but on the streets of NY:). As much as i don't like the look I think it is more of a reaction to wearing crumby jeans wth a jacket, or a too dressy jacket with jeans. Maybe one like this that does not try to fit like a 'real' sport coat is just the ticket for jeans.

I was just looking at the satorialists site and there is a person, not sure if it was a man or woman, but this person had on jeans and a cord sport coat..so I will add a well used cord jacket to the tweed above I think can work with jeans, but the jeans should fit and look good..if the jeans are too short, too tight, etc. it will just be a silly look.
