I just bought a Ralph Lauren Black Label Suit. It needs the following altered.

Jacket:
- a bit in the back
- sleeves need to be lengthened a bit

Trousers:
- shortened a bit
- seat needs to be taken in
- waist needs to be taken in
- I want the legs to be taken in somehow so they do not seem as big on me (I have skinny legs) I want a more fitted look

1. Would you characterize all of this work as pretty basic?
2. Do you think it makes a difference if I get this done at the Ralph Lauren store vs. a good tailor? Is it better to do it with Ralph Lauren since they know how the suits are designed to fit?

Thanks.

Well, you have qualified your statement, by stating your tailor is "good". If you have a good tailor, who you have a healthy rapport with, go with him. Store tailors are designed to pump out as much work as fast as possible, while if you have the relationship I've got with my tailor, you would probably have a person available who has a definite interest in making you look good, not just average.

That said, my tailor also does bespoke, so when I show up with a suit bought elsewhere, he (and his wife) always ask me when I can commission my next suit.

That said, I'd go with a "good" tailor, rather than risk the RL tailor being average or uncaring as to his end product. What you seem to have in mind suggests to me that the suit was bought elsewhere. If you were a dentist, would you administer the lidocaine if somebody else is pulling the teeth?

The quality of alterations will vary greatly depending on the skill and pride of the tailors employed by the shop from which you purchase a garment. This is also the case with independent tailors- not all are equal. When we were in the retail business and sold "off the rack", we did not charge for basic alterations- finishing the trouser length, adjusting the
waist, seat, and sleeves. We did charge for non basics like tapering the trousers, and reducing the body of the jacket. If the shop where you made your purchase does not charge for basics I would let them do those alterations. For the more sophisticated alterations I would go to a "skilled" tailor.

for basic alts its a tossup. there can be good or not so good tailors in either case.are you sure that you have a good fit in the shoulders, so that the basics are all that are needed?
what do you mean by "a bit in the back"?
careful on the leg tapering. going to an extreme will give you a top heavy look.

The shoulders fit great.

The salesman mentioned the back might be taken in a bit, though he said it was not a big deal at all. Overall, the jacket fit great. It is the trousers that need some work since my legs are so skinny. Right now they just seem to have too much room in them. They are size 35 and I'm most likely a size 34 (with skinny legs).

Thanks.

trousers from 35 to 34 is no problem.
tapering the legs moderately is ok but. like said going to an extreme, will make you look top heavy, and make your legs look still skinnier.
