I have always been under the impression that a french cuff shirt should only be worn with a suit, and not with a sport coat or blazer. Have I been misinformed?

Yes, you have. There's no reason a double cuff shirt can't be worn with either. Double cuff shirts generally have a more formal/dressy appearance than barrel cuffs, but they can certainly be worn with odd jackets if the overall ensemble supports the look they offer. Part of the reason that double cuff shirts are thought dressier is that they are usually made with dressier fabrics and collars. But there's really no reason they can't be made with an oxford cloth, or in less formal patterns such as a plaid. One of my favorite shirts made by my shirtmaker had a broadcloth mini-tartan pattern with a tab collar and double cuffs. Of course, if you dress down a double cuff shirt, you don't wear diamond cufflinks with it. (If you ever would in the first place!)

Sports in Sport Coats Don't Do Sports (In Them)

Sport coats descended from hunting jackets, etc., used in the country. No one now does sports in a sport coat in this country, unless they are driving four-in-hand coaches. They are alternative attire in place of suits when you don't want to wear a suit.

That said, it seems to me that the only type of sport coat with which French cuffs would look faintly ridiculous would be one with hunting patches.

Blazers are another animal, in my view. When I was in Copenhagen one summer, lo these many years ago, just about every native male was wearing a navy blazer and grey flannel pants. I don't know if it's the same now, but it was then clearly the summer uniform for local businessmen. Ever since, I have regarded a blazer as the close equivalent of a suit for just about any occasion, except the more formal weddings, black tie events, and funerals. So, I wear my white collared and cuffed blue-striped, French cuffed shirts with them. When else are you going to wear that?

Unless I'm in decidedly casual dress, such as tweeds, I have no problem with double cuffs with something other than a suit. As a matter of fact, tonight I wore a blue Oxxford twill blazer with charcoal flannel pants and an Ike Behar ecru twill shirt with french cuffs atop C&J monk straps in British tan.
