First suit for a lad--how old?

As a father of two boys, I have been keen on ensuring they always have appropriate dress clothing when the occasion demands. Prior to kindergarten, I left the clothing to the ladies in the family (mom, mother-in-law, aunt, etc.).

Once kindergarten started, I took over, making sure they always have a properly fitting navy blazer, khakis, weejuns, OCBD, and repp tie. This is no small effort. Just like hockey equipment being passed down between brothers, you can be assured that the younger one will not fit the older's gear when it's his turn.

My elder son is now fifteen and requested a suit to wear to the tenth grade homecoming dance. He is just starting to hit his growth spurt and wears a 36 chest. Still in an 18 or 20 boy's shirt. I managed to talk him into a nice new navy blazer and khakis with kiltie loafers, but it begs the question, when should a boy get a first suit? I've never been fond of seven year-olds wearing a suit, but maybe I'm alone here. I was thinking around sixteen to eighteen. Maybe I'm trying too hard to hold on to my boys and their boyhood.

I think he is age appropriate for a suit. If he is just hitting his growth spurt I wouldn't spend a fortune on an expensive suit but you can probably find something reasonabley priced. You might be able to find something in his size at Target. What they have there isn't bad for the low price

A suit? Job interviews whether it be after highschool or college.

A navy blazer and chino's? No age limit. Just don't bother shelling out top dollar for the best construction. Something at Ross, Marshalls, or Target would do when they are children, Macy's when they are a teenager.

I agree with several of the above posts which advise a blazer and a nice pair of trousers, rather than a full suit. Even if his comrades are wearing suits, he may very well look better in something that has evidence of a more creative touch, which is perhaps more easy to accomplish when the jacket and trousers don't match exactly. And he will not be out of place, since it is not, after all, a job interview.

Macy's when they are a teenager.
And J. Crew when he hits 20...

I'd stick with a blazer and flannels until he is out of college, interviewing, and can be trusted to care for a suit properly. I think as long as the blazer is a more formal style (besom pockets instead of patch for example) it will suffice for all events, even funerals, while he is still school age.

I think the age depends on how often it is going to be worn. I got my first suit for confirmation at age 12. But then again, all the men in my family had to wear suits to church every Sunday, as well as on Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and Easter. The the suit got plenty of wear before I grew out it, so it was worth the purchase. Even if you don't wear a suit often I think by the time you are a senior in High School you should have a suit.

One of the advantages of suiting up in high school or earlier is that it presents opportunities for dad to instruct in the sartorial arts. After he leaves for college the opportunities may be less frequent, and the habits for caring for ones wardrobe, not developed.

I have photos from when I was five or so wearing a suit (with short pants, I'll add) at Easter. I can remember the tie was clip-on. I'm also wearing knee socks and buckle shoes. If it sounds archaic, it is... the photos are black and white (cars had fins then, and men wore flat tops.)

I am flanked by a couple of lovely cousins (in dresses) of the same age. It's a nice scene!

So, five.

I think I got my next proper suit when I started debating competitively around 13 or so, and another when I was interviewing for summer honor positions (Telluride, Governor's Honors, etc.) and scholarships.

(Of course now I'm an academic physicist, so I wear suits less often than I ever did in high school!)

My first communion suit was white but with short pants. The school uniform was knickers with a white shirt and a blue tie. Knickers with knee socks were worn from Novwmber 1st to Easter. Then you wore short pants with knee socks and a white shirt puls the blue tie. It wasn't until you were confirmed that you wore long trousers.
