Many thanks for your input. I already follow your excellent advice on all three counts: infrequent dry cleaning, steaming, and trouser press. And, I brush after every wearing. However, at some point cleaning is necessary.

Does anyone have any experience with cleaning by mail that might confirm Daywalker's predictions on the need to re-press upon arrival.

If someone is set up for that, they will have proper boxes with hanger bars designed to ship suits/shirts. Shipping via UPS/FedEx insured is about $75-$80 per box. Boxes can hold up to 7-8 suits.

You are submitting your clothes to the vagaries of both the postal system and dry-cleaning?

 

The now unfortunately defunct Sulka used to provide an excellent laundry service for their shirts. One filled a metal shipping case and sent it to the store, who sent the shirts wherever they were laundering them.

Still more extreme, there are stories of 19th century Parisians who returned their dirty linen to their London shirtmakers so they could be washed in Scotland. Given the travel conditions in those days, those men must have had fifty at the laundry at any time.

Peninou in SF is very good and they've done stuff by mail. I'm sure Parkway Custom Dry Cleaners in the DC area would as well.

As a long term customer of Peninou I urge anyone considering them to send their clothes elsewhere. I'd always thought my problems with them were because they know a lot about women's clothes and nothing about men's until Iamatt told me that his wife has the same issues with them that I do.

Might I add that a number of my shirts have suffered an untimely demise at the hands of a completely unrepentant Peninou. Intercession on behalf of my client served only to remind me of the eternal axiom:
