Driving loafers

I been looking for a pair of drivers for sometime, so I went to my local high end mall this week. I stopped in both the Ferragamo and Gucci boutiques to try some on. The Ferragamo Parigi's are more solid and will take a better beating compared to the Gucci Diamante's. The Diamante's are more comfortable than the Parigi's, hands down. And there was enough arch support for my flat and narrow feet. The penny loafer style is classic and the Diamante pattern is pretty cool. I refuse to buy from boutiques unless I have to. Nordstrom is my preference for their great customer service and flexible return policy. My local Nordstrom does not carry Gucci. My size/color was not available online and the 1-800 sales associate was able to locate them at a out of state store. They will be delivered on Tuesday.

What do y'all think? Post up your drivers.

At that price, did you / would you consider a Tod's? If I ever spent that much money on a driving moc, this would be my choice. While the Gucci one is nice, I like the lines and classic feel of the Tod's better - but that is purely taste - the shoe you chose is quite nice.

I would add that if you wear those driving loafers for anything other than, you know, driving, you would also need to buy some gold chains and a chest wig. The expenses mount. Driving loafers, especially those of the blingy sort, are a very louche look, and not louche in the good way, like Bryan Ferry. More like Russian pimp on the make.

Pretty much anything you buy is going to wear out quickly (Tod's are notorious for this), so as stated earlier, don't plan to wear them anywhere but in the car if you want them to last. Complete waste of money from any brand IMO.

I should of put my flame suit on :) It's all good as everyone is entitled to their own opinions.

By the way, no sales tax for me.

I considered Tod's and really like these, but could find anywhere local that carries them.

I plan to wear these casually and not daily knowing that drivers could wear out quickly.

I wish that were true, because it's funny, but I very often see men of many ages wearing these on pavement. One hopes they didn't spend Gucci money on them.

They will wear out quickly if you're wearing them to do a lot of walking. I have a pair of Tods and they are actually good to wear when driving (they really grip), but those little rubber knobs will not hold up. Don't do a lot of walking on pavement and they should do OK. Look at bluefly.com if you want to get Tods at a discount.

I have two pairs of Tod's drivers that are about 10 years old and still look good. I don't wear them often but sometimes they fit the bill. I have to drive for 6 hours next week. I'll probably use them and then change into a sturdier pair of shoes when I arrive.

Thank you for this post. The received wisdom is that driving moccs wear out quickly, are too bling, and are overpriced. That's the view of people who've never owned and worn a good quality pair.

My Alden driving mocs may be overpriced. Their appearance is muted enough for me. I don't know if they will wear out quickly, because I once wore them on a well-tended gravel trail through an Oregon Trail historic site and found them far too fragile for even such easy going. I have enough other shoes just as comfortable for driving that can handle normal walking better than the mocs.

What is it about driving loafers that a regular leather or rubber/gum soled loafer can't achieve?

Assuming your intent to wear them casually, as you've indicated.
It occurred to me that when I have to take a really long roadtrip, I wear a pair of Topsiders for driving and relaxing in the evening or casual wear at my destination. Guess that's why I've never felt the need to buy something called "driving loafers".

One need not even look that far. I have a $20 pair of suede leather slippers from Target with a robust, grippy rubber sole that will functionally duplicate the virtues of the Gucci slippers for actual driving.

The Gucci drivers are on the way (and may go back), because I am considering a pair of Tod's Gommino penny drivers in beige or brown suede. Thanks to all who recommended Tod's. These may fit the bill over the Guccis.

I ended up returning the Gucci Diamante drivers and picked up the Rancourt Westbrook Driving Mocs in cognac bison.

Super Comfy! No break-in at all required. I'm thinking about ordering them in a khaki suede custom make-up. Rancourt charges about $60 extra for this. Total $355. I'm interested in a pair of Tod's suede drivers that look fairly similar to the the Rancourt custom make-ups. The Tod's are nice, but don't think $140 extra nice. They are very sharp looking. I'm really digging the woven leather front tie with branded shoelace clasps.
