Satin, no. Grenadine, all the time. I find it needs to be worn with patterns lest it look too funereal. But sometimes one wants to look grave and serious, and then it's great with a dark suit and white shirt. Blue and pink shirts work too.

Another vote for black grenadine. As well as blue, slate, brown, maroon, corn, and bottle green.

Satins are more difficult, at least in daylight. I like dark red, gold, and a couple shades of mid-blue, particularly with mohair suitings where the sheens complement each other. But not black.

 

I tend to think satins look their best with three-piece suits. Less is more, as it were.

 

Yes and with darker suits as I have found it to be another useful clothing option.

I wear my black satin brioni often, usually with a tweed sportcoat, white shirt and black pants finished off with a white PS tv fold.

I have a solid black silk tie but don't think I've ever worn it apart from to funerals. Solid ties generally aren't my cup of tea, though I do wear them rarely. But black? Just can't seem to do it. Maybe if I had a grenadine I would, but definitely not satin silk. Just too funereal IMO.

Then again, I could go for the Monty Burns look.

I would say so, I prefer navy to black for most things
I have never owned a solid satin tie a little too Trump for me
The closest I have are a couple woven silk ties.

Mulberrywood has a midnight blue grenadine that would do very nicely.

 

Watch North by Northwest. Lots of gray flannel suits with thin, black neck ties. Cool look, I think.

Ditto. I require that all my solid ties (I probably own 10) have texture and I don't mean a completely smooth satin texture. Grenadines are great!

Not sure because I'm not looking at it but perhaps a black satin tie over a black on white striped shirt with white collar and cuffs worn with very foggy oxford gray flannels.

Solid color satin ties are tough to blend, except for mid-blue, which for some reason is really easy.
