Covert vs. Chesterfield, and which weight?

Just about to buy myself a new overcoat and may have one made. Budget about £300-450. I've read all the threads, and thanks for the great views.

I really want something warm for freezing mornings on the pre-dawn winter station. What would be the minimum decent weight for that? Would 22oz be enough?

I'll check out some options in London this week:

New & Lingwood - nice navy covert with black velvet collar, but pricey at £450. How about warmth? Any experience? What weight is their chesterfield?

TM Lewin - lots of discussion of their covert, which is cheap at present. How warm is it?

Any experience of Tyrwhitt/Pakeman?

Finally, any views on getting one made: better to go for a covert length or chesterfield if I specify a warm cloth?

Cheers!

Revive! I would also like to know about the Pakeman coats, anyone have any experience with them? And what is the consensus around navy/midnight blue covert coats? I see Cordings has them, they seem nice.. but does it break anything if a covert coat is not the standard tan color?

Thanks in advance

Covert is a cloth and Chesterfield is a style. You could buy a covert coat that is cut in a Chesterfield style. Covert is a twill weave. When comparing cloth of the same weight a twill weave will be warmer. To beard the cold buy the heaviest coat you can find !

Aye Paul, though 'Covert Coat' is also a style - and technically for day time use. If one is limited to only one overcoat a 'Chesterfield' is perhaps more versatile.

2 questions for Sean 1982

Chesterfield every time! I'm not a Covert fan for me, on others it's ok (still not my ideal coat). I think it looks best with a sleeker figure!

I also think Chesterfields are smarter and more versatile.
1. Do you by "it" ("looks best with a sleeker figure") the Chesterfield or the Covert Coat?

2. By "sleeker figure" do you mean the person, or do you mean the coat?

If warmth is the goal, get a double breasted model of some sort. The Chesterfield I would rate as the most dressy and formal of all overcoats and covert cloth as Will mentioned, is a Spring and Fall weight coat. Seems like neither of those two are your best choice.
