I would buy the pants if you want them as pants. When they arrive, see how they look with a blazer. If you need pants in a specific color, than buy the color that you need for a blazer. Don't just buy pants for the price.

Buy the pants but wear it with something else. I’m guessing they’re like a chocolate or cocoa brown, so that makes a nice autumn trouser. Probably wear it with a lighter earth-tone kind of tweed or a sweater.

If you wear it with a navy blazer you’ll look like a bruise, but the trousers have other uses.

Contrast comes from shades/tone variation, not so much specific color. That’s the reasoning behind mismatched suits. Its also a reason you wouldn’t want to wear a suit coat by itself, even if it were acceptable. Because the jacket would then wear (age) differently than the pants, creating a mismatch that’s easily noticed. Think of it more as matching dark with light. Hey I like this. Life is not black and white, but proper dress is.

I concur with the advice given. The lighter the brown (tan, beige, khaki, wheat, et al.) the better the match with a navy jacket. The darker you get, the contrast is lost and the look is ruined. Get the pants, and wear with various shades of green and burgundy sweaters/shirts/pullovers. Don’t force something that simply will not work!

 

I think I will save the money and buy a lighter shade of pants.

I unfortunately already wear my blazer with dark grey pants for more formal events. I only later learnt that one shouldn't wear charcoal with navy, but oh well.

 

When I acquired some chocolate brown herringbone trousers, only my Camel Hair Blazer screamed for it. Later I tried a brown/light brown plaid SC that worked for that night.

 

No. No brown shoes with navy suit, either. Might be able to get away with Alden #8 shell cordovan.

 

My father told me that wearing brown shoes with a blue suit made you look like a New Yorker. So my somber suit is charcoal. In the ancient days of suit rotations, I had navy chalk stripe, and navy flannel. I also had black tassel loafers, wingtip oxfords, and cap toes. Oddly enough, the ones I sort of miss were the wingtips, from Barrie.
