Clearly I need to get on the wife's case. After laundering and ironing my shirts she puts them on "substantial hangers" with the left sleeves out and every other button buttoned. It's time to up her game a bit and have her button "all" those buttons!

Another vote for decent hangers - mine are wooden and shaped to support the shoulders and yoke. I drape the sleeves out front, which is facing left, and button only at the collar. I could not be bothered with the rigmarole of unfastening the entire placket's worth of buttons prior to donning the garment. This time saved is assuredly put to very good use - prior to embarking upon my daily adventures I admire myself in the full length mirror, arch one coy eyebrow, point at my image, pronounce 'You dog, you!' form my hand into a six gun shape, whisper 'kapow' and blow the imaginary smoke from my fingertips. Thus emboldened I flounce out the door ready to take on the world.

Saves my closet space for suits and jackets, and as an added plus the shirts are suitcase-ready; who wants to fold a bunch of shirts the night before a trip?

Please forgive my ignorance, but what does "Fronts facing left" mean? How about "collar facing forward"?

 

It simply means the shirts are hung with the left sleeve out and the front of the shirt facing left as you stand before the clothes rod and look at the clothes hanging on it.

 

I'm not feeling good anymore about having taken the under on ten for number of posts to this thread (shoot, I just cost myself the bet).

 

It's the way a really over stressed guy, claiming to be both our "mama and our papa" taught us to do it in Basic Training Old habits are hard to break. LOL.

 

The front of the shirt will face left hanging in the closet. You're right: Facing forward makes more sense when hanging.

 

Another vote for laundered folded and boxed; serves as a space saver and seasonal storage prep.

 

Just noting, I doubled down and took "under 20" when I lost my "under 10" bet for number of posts for this thread. I'm no longer feel great about my new bet.

I've always naturally hung my shirts with fronts facing left, with at least the top button buttoned, and sometimes one other.

I suspect that is because I am right handed, and it seems logical to use my right hand to sort through my shirts, and use my left to push back items left of them.

In our home's master bedroom closet, that is more like a dressing room, we have ample space for my wife & I to hang our clothes on substantial hangers.

Our hanger preference at the time we were living there, was a wooden hanger, similar in color to the Ask Andy logo.

Currently we live in a smaller apartment, and have very limited closet space in comparison to our home.

As such, and considering my wife also occupies 95% of the hanging space, we have since switched out all of our wooden hangers for space-saving hangers.

The hangers we currently use are the Real Simple Slimline Flocked Suit Hangers, which are covered in a non-slip flocked top & velvet covering.

These are pretty amazing because we truly do get to take advantage of a great deal more hanging space. (Don't be fooled though, my wife confiscated all of the extra space)

After a day of wear, if my shirt does not need to be laundered, I always place the shirt I've worn on the far right.

That way each day I know what shirt I've worn the day before, and am sure not to wear it a second day in a row.

 

I've actually never noticed how many buttons are done on my shirts. I hold them by the collar so the wire hanger from the cleaners falls out, then slide a new hanger in.

At last count I have 205 shirts, so anything nicer than substantial plastic hangers would take up far too much room.

 

Out of some habit I face them left. As far as buttoning... the top, 2nd and 4th. If only the top and 3rd as one laundry used to do, the fabric tends to swivel and not hang flat if you know what I mean. I'm ashamed to say I could do better as far as hangers. I do use the wire laundry hangers mostly because thicker hangers would really take up a lot of space. I have far too many shirts to begin with... at least 1 - 1 1/2 months before I cycle through them all.

 

This is still resonating with me. If you hand the shirt on a hanger, again like the AskAndy logo, then the hanger/shirt can be easily placed on a closet rod. If you hang it "backwards" you have to put the hanger behind the rod to hang it.

@Andy I don't think folks think you should turn the hanger around. But one could opt to hang shirts front facing right, instead of left Maybe lefties do that?

"Maybe lefties do that?" :icon_scratch: Nope...I'm a southpaw and my shirts are hung facing left. My wife's also a southpaw and she also hangs my shirts with the fronts facing left, but she does frequently allege that I may be obsessively compulsive. Perhaps therein lies the secret?
