I was reading a description of a suit at Nordstrom's website and saw the term "besom chest pocket". I did not know what the word "besom" meant, so of course I went to Merriam Webster's website. After I put in "besom", the definition appeared, which you can see here: https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/besom

Naturally, my first reaction was, "Why the hell would I want a pocket made out of twigs?"

(It was just after that when I noticed that "besom pocket" had its own separate entry.)

JJR512:

225 posts and you do not own your copy of The Encyclopedia of Men's Clothes now easily downloadable??

If you did you could instantly find all the types of pockets:
Besom (Pronounced "bee zom") or Piped -- The inset pocket opening is finished on one or both sides (top and bottom called a double besom) with a welt, a narrow folded piece of fabric (aka Piping or Cording) to show just the slit of the pocket. The finishing technique reinforces the pocket opening. This style is more flattering to heavy men, since it draws less attention to the waist and has less fabric there.

Have no fear, Andy! Buying your encyclopedia is on my list of things I need to do after I get a job!
