At 3.75 inches--Tie Too Wide for Today's Suits?

Most of my ties are 3.75" wide at blade. Are they too wide and incompatible with today's suits with narrow lapels? I generally wear the Southwick traditional Douglas "sack" suit with the unchanging lapels, and my ties look appropriate. However, I may purchase a Zegna, and the lapels are noticeably narrower. Could I still wear the 3.75 inch ties, or would I look goofy?

I don't like the look, but I'm young. I think you've got it right though; the tie width should be proportional to the lapel width. A 3.75" might look OK though. Some of the wider (4"-4.25") would look off to me. That said, I avoid anything under 3". I need people much older than my father to take me seriously.

Unless you're getting an ultra slim lapel zenga, or are a smaller size (36-38), you should be just fine.

I am sure I am in the minority, but I ALWAYS felt that 3.75 inches was/is too wide. I recently spent a small fortune and had almost all my times narrowed at Tiecrafters in NYC to about 3.25 inches, or in some cases, 3.5 inches. Example: a woman in old office building only ever commented on my ties when I wore one of the 5 I bought in France on my honeymoon in 1996. These were all 3.25 inches and are probably still my fave ties. Caveat: I did find a vintage 1974-75 era YSL Rive Gauche tie at a vintage shop here in SF which is probably 4 inches. I plan to leave that one alone, as it captures that moment in time perfectly.
