A question about pants....

A while back, I received 2 pairs of high end Italian slacks as a gift. In they went into the closet. Anyway, I recently took them out to have them hemmed and noticed that one of the slacks is missing its side pockets - although on the inside, the pockets do exist/are constructed - i.e., seeming to be missing only the "slits"…I never encountered anything like this before, any thoughts?

Some relevant pics are below...

They're probably just basted shut. Pull the pockets as open as you can get them, and see if there is a fairly thick thread, often white or yellow, holding it shut; the stitches will be fairly large. If so, just cut the thread and the pockets should open. This is most commonly seen on suit jacket pockets.

Two thoughts: 1. Some trousers have their pockets on the seam. There is no "outside pocket part," just a place where the side seam can be opened. 2. I suppose it is possible that the pockets are horizontal, and the openings are parallel to (and part of the) the seam between the trousers and the waistband.

I mean, if they've gone to the trouble of constructing pockets, there's an opening for them somewhere (albiet potentially basted at the moment). Keep looking.

That is strange! I agree with the OP, there does not appear to be any way to access those pockets. The rear pockets are there and appear to be functional, so the manufacturer at least knows what pockets are and how to make them. Weird.

Gentlemen:
A Seam ripper is a tool. If you wish to use the pocket, you may. Others may not. The stitching will keep the shape of the garment from changing should you not need to open them. There will not be flaps, but the pockets may be opened without damage should you wish. If you encounter any other difficulty your alterations tailor or dry cleaner may resolve them. Any alterations tailor or suit salesperson will have a seam ripper and will be able to tell you immediately if there is any reason not to make use of the pockets, which are intended to be used if you wish or not if you don't.

Lovely gift to have received.
Regards to all,
