A life lesson - turtlenecks at the hairdresser's

Figuring out what to wear to a hair salon is usually a bit of a quandary to me. I usually go there on my way to something else- a meeting, a train station, a shopping trip; on the other hand I really don't want to stand out and usualy choose something muted. Today I had planned to meet a friend for coffee in town afterwards. I decided against shirts a while ago when I realised that hair fragments would inevitably end up straying on the collar. This afternoon I opted for a black turtleneck to circumvent this issue and keep warm outside. Silly me, for when the assistement set out to shampoo my hair she stuck a towel into the neck. Before the haircut per se, I asked my haidresser -I've known her for twelve years and have always been on very cordial terms with her- not to do the same, but rather go around if possible, as I feared it would stretch the fabric. She politely said that it would be hard do do so, choosing instead to roll the ends in, claiming that it 'wouldn't stretch'. I felt rude about suggesting to her how to do her job and didn't argue, although being very fussy about the tightness of such garments I reprimanded myself on the poor decision I'd made. On walking out of the salon I checked the neck- no evident damage done, though I suspect this just contributed to the general stretching process that occurs over time. Luckily I own enough turtlenecks to rotate them appropriately in casual settings, so I'll just see this as a lesson learned- never wear them in a situation where unnecessary stretching may happen.
