If you are in England or travel there, the Burlington branded socks are excellent, particularly their argyles. I have learned that they do not currently ship to the states because of a (my interpretation) legal issue with the Burlington name. I have purchased both their wool and blends and both hold up well over time.
Found these at "SockShop" website in UK, I sent them off an email asking about shipping to US. Hope to report back next week.

That's where I originally purchased the Burlingtons from. Last time I tried to order, I recall that I got to the place on the online order form for entering shipping address and the site blocked US addresses. If you have success, I'd be interested in knowing that.

I like Gold Toe as well. Too bad they don't make a wider range of colors. I'm a fan of red socks, and even the occasional magenta or chartreuse. To quote Nathan Lane's character from The Birdcage when he was wearing red socks, "One does want a bit of color."

While I recently splurged on a few $40 pair at Turnbull & Asser, If you're looking for socks that are mid-weight and well-made, I've been really pleased with the Cole-Haan socks I bought at Nordstrom and Bloomingdale's. I think they're $9 per pair if you buy three pair.

For those needing a sock that pads and quite comfortably protects their over-used dogs, I have relied on Thorlos as my go-to socks for my exercise needs and for wear with hiking/field boots. The pairs I've purchased have been basically white/black and solid black. Though they do offer several nicely heathered hues for the more sartorially

creative types and generally cost $12 to $15 a pop.

In the old days, the "Golden Fleece" label at Brooks Brothers meant the item was of highest quality. (Maybe it still does, to some extent.)

One of the few remaining original Golden Fleece items the store sells is Golden Fleece socks. They are sized, made in England, available in different lengths, and come in three colors (blue, grey, and brown). I have been wearing them for a long time.

They are easy to spot because they have a gold band around the top.

My single biggest gripe with socks is how the heel fits.

I want the heel to fit squarely and securely in line with my heel, but more often than not, the one-size-fits all socks just don't cut it.

I prefer OTC Compression socks the most, and one of my favorite socks are from a brand that no longer exists -- Equmen.

I will say that I have a pair of Tommie Copper OTC compression socks that are pretty good, but I don't believe they make the particular kind that I have any longer.

In an effort to consolidate the list, and to add a couple others, here is the master list of Sock brands we've collected so far:

Ace & Everett (3D design effects)
Bresciani
Burlington branded socks (England)
Cole-Haan
Corgi
Darn Tough
Gammarelli
Gold Toe
Marcoliani
Mazarin
Pantherella (long lasting and comfortable)
Paul Smith
Pedemeia in Portugal (delivers 96% of the quality at a far lower cost)
Per Pedes
Sockwell Compression
Stance
Thorlos
Wigwam
VK Nagrani

Also: Italian-made OTC merino wool from BB Factory Stores
