For many, many years I’ve had my shirts made by BB; and specifically the 5th floor Madison ave folks - who, as you may know, were nearly bespoke in their custom work. And over time, we found a size/styling that worked pefectly for me.

Of course, that’s all gone. So I’ve been looking for a new shirtmaker for quite some time.

My search brought me into contact with many shirtmakers over the past year. I don’t want to mention names; but I’ll simply say that some of them were quite good; however, many of them were not so good, at least in my experience.

Then someone here mentioned Ascot Chang.

Now, I am a buy local, buy American, and a like-to-have-a-personal-relationship-with-your-tailor kind of guy. So I wasn’t expecting much.

However, my initial interchange with Ascot Chang really impressed me: their knowledge, their attention to details, their willingness to listen, their professionalism, their courtesy. (And btw, I thought it was nifty that they launder/shrink the fabric before measuring & cutting.)

Anyhoo, I sent off to them one of my shirts to have copied (something I’ve done before, at some expense, and received shirts back that only barely resembled my shirt.) They had a few questions. We went over a few things.

And amazingly enough, to me at least, they sent me a new shirt that is absolutely perfect. (Okay, a few very small details were just very slightly off, but overall….)

Beautifully and impeccably constructed; the fit, details, and fabric are perfect; the collar/cuffs/placard are lightly lined; it’s cut perfectly and identically to my BB shirts; the collar is beautifully shaped; BB shirring on the cuff and single side stitching, and so on.

I am very happy with the overall experience and especially my shirt; and will be placing my first order in the next week or so.

I highly recommend them; and a big shout-out also to Rachel at Ascot, who was kind, humorous and professional. Many thanks!

P.S. perhaps I’ll try to put up pics later this week.

I'm glad you found a shirtmaker who works to your specs.

Ascot Chang are known for a distinctive collar style (I think it is the Collar #53) which enables a one-piece collar to stand up from the body of the shirt without the splayed effect of a camp collar. I have a couple of their shirts, but not of the dress variety -- these are in the old fashioned pullover style where the buttons on the front of the shirt go down only to the middle, much as in a polo shirt.

Their website has pictures and a description of the collar:

I don't have any pics of my Ascot Chang shirts (and I am not even sure where they are, having so many shirts, LOL). But this link should give you an idea of what they look like (the only difference is that mine have long sleeves):

I am not near any of their stores, wonder what that Polo goes for?
Given that their long-sleeve white polo shirt (with a button-down collar, a bit odd) costs HK$ 1655, I would think that a similar shirt without a button-down collar might be about the same. That is US$ 212 and change according to this morning's exchange rate. Of course, you can email them and find out.
