Does anyone have any experience with those collar button extenders (basically a loose button on a small loop of string, designed to be placed around the proper collar button to add ~0.5-1" to the collar size). I've been exercising more recently and my neck has gotten a touch thicker. Combined with OCBD shrinkage, my collars on half my wardrobe are suddenly rather uncomfortable. Obviously I don't want to replace half my shirts. Do those extenders work subtly or do they muck up the shape of the chest/neck area too much to be worth using?

If you try to expand TOO far, it can ruin the look of the area, but it's usually under a tie, anyway.
I've always just moved the button over. You can gain a half inch this way, but keep in mind that it widens the "tie space" so you might want to tie a wider knot, also.
I usually move over the 1st button below the collar button by half the distance to make the transition smoother.

They're certainly not an ideal solution to your problem - that would be buying new shirts - but I suppose you could give them a try. Probably cost you under five bucks, and if you buy from a local store (as opposed to some guy on eBay), you could likely return it for a full refund if it's not to your liking.

We sell them, but even then we tell customers it's a temporary solution at best.

I got a bunch on eBay and they work, more or less. But I had to buy new shirts too.

If you iron your own shirts try this: while the shirt is still damp (straight out of the wash), iron the collar on a hottish setting, and pull one end of the collar hard while the iron is on the other end. Repeat from the other side. I got almost half an inch back on my J. Press oxfords that way.

Hmm, that seems pretty definitive. Thankfully, only the oxford cloth have changed significantly. The whole idea of the exercise was to be a little less skinny (was starting out at a 15" neck), so weight loss isn't a great choice for me. I guess I'll experiment with moving the collar button and meanwhile troll for discounts on some new shirts.
