Hello, I want to order a couple of Bill´s Khakis, M2 no pleats, I am getting the regular twill and chamois cloth models. These are going to be my first chinos, I usually wear jeans. I am wondering what´s the proper width for a belt.

I tend to think that 1.5 is for jeans, and 1.25 would be the proper width for Khakis/Chinos, am I right?

I personally don't like any wider than 1 3/8 inches for any purpose. However, I may be in the minority here. I've noticed that many men wear 1 1/2 inches with chinos, particularly with more casual ensembles.

You probably already know this, but check www.sierratradingpost.com for Bills, and sign up for their deal flyer emails. You can sometimes get them for as little as a third of full retail that way.

I don't know that this is a hard and fast rule. I wear my 1.5" CXL belt from rancourt with both jeans and khakis. likewise, i've seen other men wearing 1.5" belts with khakis. I honestly don't see how .25" in width would make much of a difference to the general public who isn't going to be paying attention to such details.

Like SG 67, my perspective is relative formality. For khakis pressed flat in front, without cuffs or a crease, worn with boats or camp mocs and a polo, I usually wear a 1.5" belt. For cuffed, creased khakis, typically paired with a jacket and tie, I go to 1.25" or even 1" for the right buckle.

I like this perspective,

I was thinking about these belts

The last one, is avalaible in 1 1/4 as well. I would wear Bills M2, flat front, regular twill and chamois cloth, this last fabric is supposed to be a bit more formal. I will be using thins pants with chukkas, derby shoes polos and tucked shirts.

should I go 1 1/2 or 1 1/4?

The 1 1/4" will be more flexible. It will work with attire where the 1 1/2" is just too wide.

You can't go wrong. Whatever looks right to you.
Negative. One most certainly can err in judgement. The " You can't go wrong" and " Whatever looks right to you " attitude has contributed much to the quandary that we find ourselves in now: the need to address the prevalence of pajamas and shower shoes among individuals while out and about in society. :icon_pale:

Welcome to the forum. :)

I agree with your sentiments regarding the gulf between the appropriate belt to be worn with chinos and pajamas outside the residence. (And I am one that suffers from analysis paralysis at times.) However, I believe that the OP is after a more discerning and nuanced reply than the standard " it's all good " or " whatever works " rejoinder.

I honestly don't know if there is an important best belt width for khakis. For a suit, I prefer the standard size that is an inch or less. For casual pants, I don't think it matters much.

It's not like tying a tie four inches too short or four inches too long, which will not look good, no matter what.

As far as the belt looking like it's "floating in the loops", if it is tight enough, it won't float or look like it (unless you get a half inch belt or something ridiculously tiny.)

It's hard to believe we are even discussing this.

I'm not sure there's much nuance to be had here. Not every aspect of men's clothing needs to be parsed and pondered over. If the belt looks good then go with it.

As I mentioned in a previous post, the buckle and grain of the leather (assuming we're discussing leather belts) determines whether it's appropriate for wearing with chinos.

Ha ! This from a man borrowing an image of Oscar Wilde. I imagine that a minor detail such as the width of a belt would have been of the utmost importance to the aesthete par excellence. :icon_study:

The idea of Oscar Wilde picking out khakis is hilarious.

Anyway, I tend to prefer narrower belts. I don't have a problem wearing even a 1" belt with jeans, but it's certainly a choice. I think most of the belts I like are either 1" or 1.25".

I have a 1.25" bridle belt that looks fine with my jeans, and the jeans I prefer have wide belt loops (because why wear "cowboy pants" that aren't actually official Pro Rodeo wear?)

The point is not one with regard to Wilde choosing to don a pair of chino trousers , but pertaining to the significance of sartorial details. Wilde stated that clothes should hang from the shoulders.

1.25 to 1.5 inches is fine.

It depends on the rest of the outfit, and yes, there is an aesthetic consideration that Oscar Wilde would have paid attention too.

If wearing it with a suit, I don't want a belt that will draw attention to itself because of the buckle or it's width. I don't want it poking out nor do I want it to ruin the lines of the suit.

With casual slacks it's a different story and I think a 1.5 inch belt or perhaps even 2 inches will be fine.
