After years of Jonesing, the great enablers, RogerP, and Fading Fast have prompted my first purchase of 2019.

The Stolz Tirol traditional Austrian hunting Loden wool overcoat.

The model is 190 cm tall, I'm 176 cm. So it should be mid calf length on me, as it's 46" long. At 520 Gms. (18.5 oz.) of dense boiled wool, it should be mighty warm.

First pics will be unaltered. The sleeves will need to be taken up and the sleeve strap moved accordingly. The only tailor I trust for this is slow as dirt. So it should be a few weeks. Expect arrival this week as they have a distribution center in NJ.

They offered to send both a 38 and a 40 so I can see which works better. I’d rather not make
The short trip to the
Post Office if I don’t have to. After discussion with Robert Stolz, the owner, we’re going with a 40R whicj is my normal suit size.

I want room for bulky sweaters and thick Harris Tweeds. He says they are generously cut to accommodate suits and bulky layering so I may well end up exchanging it for a 38 after all. Will know shortly.

The coat arrived today. Sent it back today.

Too big. The website warns its cut fully and made to fit over a suit. They suggest sizing down 1 size. They are correct. The 40R went back and the 38R will ship tomorrow.

What a soft hand and beautiful color. The pass thru slits are a fantastic feature. The coat falls 2/4 down my calves and getting anything out of my trouser pockets would be a reall pain if not for the pass thru slits. For such a dense 18.5 oz wool, it’s very flexible, with complete ease of motion. Even sizing down will leave plenty of freedom and room. The cut is very generous, but hangs without looking full. Until you pull it away from your body and realize you could stuff a toddler underneath. The 38 should still have plenty of room, as I was wearing a thick labeled tweed vest and thick Harris Tweed sportscoat underneath, and still couldn’t fill the space. The shoulders are about a half inch bigger than needed, so the size down should be just right.

The coat in size 38R is back from the tailor after having the sleeves altered. He had to really work for his money as the sleeves have a suede lining inside at the edge. I had not noticed that nice touch. Took it out for its maiden voyage. I received a number of compliments on it, one guy coming up to me at Wegmans and exclaiming that it was a handsome Loden Coat. He was surprised to see it as he mentioned they are not found around here except for the Landau shop in Princeton. I was surprised to meet someone IRL who knew what Loden is.
