It can work but, at 1 1/8", the strap is a bit thin for most chinos. You might experience those unsightly folds, at your waistband A wider strap would work better.

If I get AE's wide belt would that go well with wool trousers or is it too wide?

I currently wear a couple of Coach belts that feature an inch and a half strap, with chinos, and they seem to work fine. I also wear several embroidered, emblematic belts, that measure right at 1 1/2", with chinos. I think the wider AE belt you are referencing will work just fine.
