I'm thinking of getting these to match my Cliftons. I'm generally going to wear wool trousers but on occasion I'll wear chinos. I'm getting it in brown btw.

It can work but, at 1 1/8", the strap is a bit thin for most chinos. You might experience those unsightly folds, at your waistband A wider strap would work better.

Depends on the pants. I have some chinos and khakis that have narrow loops. I have some that have larger loops. As a result of this I have a lot of belts.

I currently wear a couple of Coach belts that feature an inch and a half strap, with chinos, and they seem to work fine. I also wear several embroidered, emblematic belts, that measure right at 1 1/2", with chinos. I think the wider AE belt you are referencing will work just fine.
