Anyone looking for these old cream colored wool blend socks might prefer the Fox River Classics that retail for $9 a pair less than Wigwam's $22 625. Both USA made but the Fox Rivers are lighter weight and have higher wool count. Both can be found on sale at better prices but the dealers are few and far between. Sometimes, dealing with the mfg directly is your best bet. It was suggested to go up a size on these. I wear the usual 9-12 socks from most companies as I'm a 12 but Fox River, correctly, suggested to get their XL size if one is a 12. The 625s fit me well in the L size. However, they are thicker so you've got to consider your shoe fit more so than with the FR Classic.

And the Fox Rivers seem to be the best approximation of the Trad Adlers from the fifties and early sixties. If it's too hot or too cold to wear your Tretorns sockless, get these and go back to the tennis court with happy feet.

Wigwams I'd remembered from my youth but have no recollection of the Adlers which I've read about over the years. I've become a fan of the Fox River Classics so interesting to here of their similarity to the old Adler socks. Either of these are so much better than the Costco Kirkland white socks I had been wearing these past years for casual wear. My wife prefers the Kirklands so now, she has all of mine on top of her own.

Oh, and the sock count now? Let's just say I loaded up on quite a few more pair of the 625s, FR Classics, some ragg wool socks from both and a few other winter weight boot socks from them. The classic merino wool socks from Costco (Outdoor Trail) are no more but I was prescient enough a few years back to buy a few packs (I have 24 of them set aside) so I'm good. :D

Just ordered four pairs!

Hope you like them as much as I do! Remember, turn them inside out to wash, give them at least two-three washes for them to "feel" right and don't wash with dark colors else you find bits ot wool on everything although most comes out in the dryer. I keep a separate basket in the laundry room for my socks. If you find they aren't for you, the Fox River Classics are a nice alternative. I was made aware of the brand by a fellow at WB Woolen Miles who usually sells these brands at a discount. But the Wigwams have a better weight and look right, especially with boat shoes!

Thanks for the tips and reviving this thread! Gave me an incentive to purchase. I should have clarified--I purchased the Fox River Classics and directly from the manufacturer. Maybe I should have a pair or two of Wigwams as well. Those are white in color correct?

Both are a luscious ivory/cream color, not white. That's the whole point of them is that ivory color. Same laundry treatment for the Fox Rivers. I tried one pair after the suggestion from WB Woolen Mills and ended up buying another 10 pairs because they're just a bit lighter in weight and even have a higher wool blend than the Wigwam 625s. Helps with the different shoes I have (I always order boots up a size for thicker socks). One thing I was advised by Fox River was to get the extra large rather than large size as I normally am a 12 in socks and their large might be just a wee small. You look like you might be somewhat petite so I doubt that'll be any issue for you. I was at the outside of their large size range. If one is in the middle, they're good.

Thanks! I'm on the lower end of size medium so I went with that.

Are these the Wigwams that you would recommend?

Yes but not at those prices! That's full retail and I don't do retail. Keep in mind, not everyone likes the way these socks feel as I said in my original post. Use google to find best prices. I've bought from Campmor, GoBros, direct from Wigwam with a coupon, etc. I think I've paid recently about $15 a pair between the various dealers and $9 a pair for the Fox River Classics.

I should add, these style socks aren't for everyone because of how the toes are made. Fox Rivers are better than the 625s for comfort but I find both comfy enough. After the inside out washes and you get used to the different feel, they're fine (for me). I wore some 625s on a three mile hike the other day though I have hiking socks that fit the toes better. Point being, no blisters or issues with them. Just don't go all in until you try them. As said, I think the Fox Rivers are nicer wearing socks and less expensive but they mimic the 625 look (very well, I might add) but aren't 625s which have the right beef to them.

Thank you! I guess what I should do is wait for the Fox Rivers to arrive and see whether I might want to go for a thicker pair for some of my shoes.
