I’ve been thinking over several threads, to wit the baseball cap/spats and so I enter the realm of controversy yet again with a question: Why wear a fedora – or are there any hats that are appropriate?

Here in the fly-over states hats are seldom worn by men, even when temperatures dip below freezing. The only really popular hats are baseball caps, which was treated at length in another thread. Occasionally one will see an elderly gentleman in summer with a straw fedora-like hat, the kind with very narrow brim ala the Rat Pack. The thread dealing with spats raised questions of “costumeâ€.

While all clothing can be considered “costumeâ€, and the baseball cap thread raised the question of appropriateness, is wearing a fedora a bit too “costumeâ€? I feel that if I were to wear one people might think I was trying to be Indiana Jones or reliving the 30s or 40s. Not that I have anything against that, but curious as to how others might view this
