Come on, if you don't like the threads then stop posting in them! It's like my ultra-liberal friend listening to conservative talk radio when he gets all riled up and starts throwing things at it -- no point in continuing the pain if it's so bad.
Whoa, Jovy, hold on there. I didn't say I didn't like this thread. I love this thread. I love all the threads. In this one (above) I was merely commenting on The Doc's fear of posing. But that doesn't mean I don't love this thread. I do. Honest. And I love The Doc and I love you too.

(Look, there aren't a hell of a lot of us on Eastern Time up and posting at this hour; sometimes it's just you and me. We gotta be friends here, okay?)
Fair enough, but you have a habit of saying threads are boring, stupid, or pointless lately.
Again, I don't think anyone is saying that folks must or should post pictures of their faces, that's up to each individual. I think some of us are just curious as to the reasons why people take that approach.

As for me, while I don't care to advertise to the world at large my identity, it doesn't bother me if someone I know sees my picture and recognizes me. And let's face it, the only people who can identify me from my picture are people that I already know. A total stranger who happens to see my picture on the internet isn't going to know who I am.

Besides, my picture, like many others here I'm sure, is already out there on the internet. Based on the jobs that many here have, it would be hard for me to believe that your pictures arent in your local newspapers on occasion, and most newspapers have online editions. Heck, several of the pictures that I have posted of myself here were copied directly from the online edition of a newspaper. I didn't take them or post them to the internet first.

I've also run across my picture several times on web sites where someone is posting pictures they took at this or that event. For example, several folks posted pictures on the internet that they took at a high school reunion that I recently attended. I didn't even know those pictures of me were out there in cyberspace.

To me it's one thing to identify yourself by telling the world your name, address, phone number, etc., and quite another to simply have a picture or two with no identifying information out there in cyberspace. Like I said, many probably already have pictures out there and just don't know it.

I wish neither my face nor my identity to be published on the internet. Dressing up and then taking photographs of yourself might seem normal to some but distinctly abnormal to others. Perhaps you aren't as paranoid as I am, but that doesn't mean people aren't out to get you.
I go to a motorcycle forum and guys, or their wife/girlfriend, are proudly posing in front of the bike; or an astronomy forum and guys are proudly posing in front of their telescopes or home observatories; and so on.

Then I come here and it looks like some kind of witness protection program. I halfway expect to log on one day and see Andy's head cropped out in the header. :icon_smile_big:

As another motorcyclist (and high-performance car guy too), I always get a laugh out of people who go to such great lengths to block out their license plate numbers when they post a pic of their ride. It is nothing short of counter-intuitive (just ask any guy with the vanity plates).

Faces--on the other hand, if you will--are sometimes better left off, especially if you are on a porn site...:p
This is about clothes and I would respect anyone preferring anonymity on the great web.

Perfectly acceptable to me

There are pics of me on the Web, so I'm not entirely paranoid. I just want to be able to choose, more or less, what is associated with those images. As Hector notes, having an interest in nice clothing is seen as odd in many quarters these days, and spending time talking about it/posting pictures online would be seen as even odder. I don't natter on about clothing in real life, and wouldn't dream of discussing, say, the comparative cost of high-end shoes with other people. I chat here only because it's a gathering of like-minded people. Most outside our small sphere, however, simply would not understand.
Plus, I think this forum is a lot more likely to be perused by the general public as a resource than a site about astronomy or something like that. (A lot of people have to dress up once in awhile; not everyone has an interest in some of the other sites.) I have posted my picture here, but not often.

Some people just don't want to have their face out there; given the behavior of some of the folks on the clothing boards, I can see why people don't want their picture or ID out there.
Because I am a world renowned pornographer/US Senator
Is that / meant to be an "and" or an "or"?
Both naturally. The porn would help fuel my political career. You can't get into that club without a serious moral flaw others can use and abuse.

No wonder Mike Huckabee didn't get any farther. His worst moral flaw is doing an interview with a reporter on a New York Times expense account and picking the Olive Garden.
Because most people would rather not be obnoxious Cruisers.
Bogdanoff, I'd love to see your wardrobe.

Suppose it was revealed to the world who someone here was, and then you'd see articles about that person in glossy magazines with quotes from the "favorite underwear" thread.

While not everyone may be in that situation, there is no way to clean it up once you are there.
But you don't need to show your face... you can easily blank it out.

Yes, but after reading that certain members were recognized -- by screen name -- by clerks at Brook Brothers, and so on, I don't really care for someone showing up one day and saying "hey, didn't I just see your shoe collection on that Andy forum?"
Fair enough, I guess.
That was nice to say about me. :icon_smile_big:
So it you Carly Simon had in mind?
My face is already on the internet (YouTube, Facebook, various learned society websites, charity event galleries, etc) so I don't mind posting on here. Plus, since I'm one of the leading players of my musical instrument (the guqin) in the UK, it's bound to end up in the public domain sooner or later.

Just learned more than I'd ever need to know about the guqin on wikipedia. Saw your name on there too!
