I have read here that C&J and Alfred Sargent have made them in the past. I have a couple pair that are over 10 years old that I'm fairly certain are C&J based on the last, workmanship, styling and materials. I was shocked by some of the shoes that appeared on their website this season that are branded Peal. While posters more knowledgeable than me believe some of them are still C&J manufacture, and I feel that others are likely Sargent, there are others that are so uniquely ugly and odd looking that I have no idea of attribution, except to be certain they're not C&J, and doubt they're Sargent either.

Very interesting ! not C & J or AS !

Who is going to own up to them !
I had started a thread about a week ago on Brooks' Peal branded shoes. The shoe in the following link had been branded Peal on their website at that time, but is no longer so described.

The wonderous power of AAAC?

The search I just did of Brooks website for Peal men's shoes yielded shoes that do appear to my eye to be of Northampton manufacture, with most being Sargent, and yes, still some possible C&J.

Good for Brooks! Peal has always been their brand for decent to excellent English shoes, and so it should remain! (Even if they still don't know the difference between a spectator and a saddle. ;))

I don't know for sure who makes them ....

but the ones I have are replicas of C&J, especially the blucher I bought last spring with a refined sole and elongated vamp, about 1/8" thick sole. They also fit me just as the 337 last does. When on sale and with BB charge card discounts, they have been under $300 which is about $150 less than P.Lal's price for handgrades. They aren't the quality of C&J, but they are nice shoes for the price. Also, their price is $400 cheaper than the always-high Ben Silver and the NYC C&J store where handgrades are $725.

If you zoom in on ths picture the details in the writing inside the shoe are the giveaway:

https://www.brooksbrothers.com/IWCa...ction_Id=523&Product_Id=1376443&Parent_Id=522

The font used is very smilar to that used on ther G&G ready to wear range (found under the tongue) which are made at the Sargent factory. Also the number 89 can be found, 89 is a Sargent last.

If you look through the Sargent catalogue on Pediwear you'll see most of the styles.

That's the beauty!

I suspect you're entirely correct. Sargent shoes usually look a bit clunky to my eye, though this is a particularly egregious example. They look very much like some of the shoes that Lloyd & Haig used to brand and sell in their Madison Ave. shop.

Surely if Brooks want their shoes made to a certain quality spec, both C&J and AS are capable of making up to (or down to...) that spec, so it wouldn't matter...but I may well be wrong!
Any of the shoemakers left in Northamptonshire will make any style to any specification, all have the equipment and expertise to attain this. I would say it's knowing who "really" made the shoes that makes us inquisitive to where they came from.

Reading other threads I would say the majority of shoes made under "other" labels come from the following..

In no particular order

Alfred Sargent
Grenson
Cheaney
Loake
C&J
