How can a white shirt ever go out of fashion? A white shirt with any color suit or tie will always be "in fashion" - whatever that means anyways.
Actually, I'm not sure I've ever seen Obama without a white shirt on with his suits. As far as the NBC commentators go, I often see Brian Williams and Tom Brokaw in white shirts, but Keith Olberman, Chris Mathews, and Chuck Todd often wear blue or patterned shirts.
On-air TV personalities can get away with dressing a bit more flashy. Some choose to, and some don't.
