To our tailor members.

Many years ago I made jackets and trousers. I'm beginning the hobby again and will try to use less machine stitching. What is(are) the right stitches to use for the center seam on trousers where strength is needed? Backstitch? And if I choose to do the side seams by hand rather than machine, what stitch is recommended.

Thanks.

Backstitch is the traditional choice for the centre seam. It is elastic and strong:

To stitch the four long seams by hand, seems to me an absolute waste of energy.

What about a lapped seam for the two outside seams? Stitch them by machine, then fold both seam allowances
to one side and run a hand felled pick stitch at about 1/8 - 1/4" away from the edge.
