I'm considering investing in a pair of Fratelli Orsini leather gloves to wear on nights out at more upscale downtown lounges or to the theatre (I live in Chicago):



Most likely I'd be wearing them on slightly chilly fall/early spring evenings where a proper pair of winter gloves would be a bit too warm. Of the colors available, which would be the most versatile to wear with a charcoal or navy suit, or if I had the need to wear it, black tie?

Honestly, I'd be satisfied to own a pair of any of the colors at the link, though I'm worried that white may come off as ostentatious.

I would reserve white kids for formal occasions only unless one is leading a band or directing traffic.

The only time I have worn my white gloves was with white tie.

Otherwise a simple black suffices for me.

My vote was for a pair of slate hued gloves. However, it seems to me the time for wearing formal fashion gloves, sadly, is long past. The only time I can remember ever having a real need for such was when I wore a white pair, as part of a ceremonial military uniform...and that was a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away! LOL.

I agree with the above. I can’t imagine more than one or two times in one’s life that white gloves would be appropriate for a formal occasion. I don’t think you can go wrong with black.

Black is ok - I probably would go with Slate since it probably would look better with all colors.

Forgive me for answering your question differently than you intend, but I think there is a confusion of terms. What you describe wearing is not formal wear. Formal evening wear is white tie and tailcoat. Semi-formal evening wear is black tie, also called a tuxedo. You propose wearing a dark suit, once called a lounge suit.

With actual formal wear, you wear white gloves; preferably kidskin, though white cotton is also acceptable. You do not wear them with ordinary suits. The retailer contributes to this confusion of terms, because only their white gloves could be considered a formal glove (Though the style isn't correct.) and the balance are just leather gloves. If you wish one of these, and only intend to wear black shoes, either the black or dark grey gloves would be fine.

Personally, I prefer some shade of oxblood (Darker red-brown) for versatility. And, yes, they can even be worn with black shoes if they harmonize with the rest of what you're wearing.
