I've taken a liking to the old school Florsheim longwings recently thanks entirely to this board. I didn't care for them at first, but they really grow on you. At any rate, I'm curious as to the point behind the v-cleat. Why is that a big deal and what's it for? Many thanks -

It is positioned at the point where most men exert the greatest wear on their heels, thereby keeping the heel from wearing down as quickly, metal being harder than leather. As you may have discovered, however, the v-cleat when combined with a double row of closely-spaced nails can make for a very slippery ride. Some English bespoke makers place a much larger metal insert into their heels, upon client request. Such heels wear indefinitely but make a real clatter on pavement or hard flooring.
