I often prefer to wear a suit with an open collar shirt for dinner events and things as such; sometimes a tie just seems like too much. On these occassions, what kind of style of shirt looks best with a suit? For example, point collar or spread? Single vs. double button collar? etc, etc. I usually wear a point collar with a double button collar; it seems to stand up the best and look "crisp", but I may just have no idea that Im breaking some fashion rules when I do this (thats why Im here) :) Would appreciate the help guys, thanks so much!

If I'm deliberately wearing an open collar I favour a large, long pointed collar which will stand up well with the points sitting just inside the jacket. A spread collar just doesn't look right and I dislike a two-button collar.

The point collar stands up well and gives a nice balance to the neck, while the spread pulls back way to far. I prefer the two button collar for casual as it has a little more interest, and also typically has a slightly wider band which encourages the collar to stand up well, as does a nice pressing.
