I am 34 years old and have my 5 year old boys birthday coming up and quite a large party.
I need some help with dressing style. I have a blue blazer. What should I be wearing for shirt and pant and what color? Which shoes? I have a new LV belt that I want to wear and am open for choices for shoes.

Were I to go to one of these in a blue blazer, I'd also wear grey trousers with a contrasting vest, a blue french cuff shirt with a blazer-appropriate necktie and some well-polished dress shoes. Would also wear a grey or navy blue fedora, but not in the house. Most of my shirts have white collars and cuffs, but perhaps that is a bit much with a blazer for some folks...

Birthday party for a five-year-old? Jeans or khakis and a polo or other shirt that you can toss in the wash easily. Your clothes will get trashed.
Yes. A blazer or sport coat would be over the top at a birthday party—even a large one—for a 5-year-old. Although you’ll be the father of the birthday boy, you’ll still be on the periphery of the festivities. This event will belong to your son and to the other kids there.

You’ll be support staff. Dress down.

C'mon, you guys. You're setting the bar entirely too low. Somebody is going to be the best dressed at that party and it might as well be him. He already wants to wear that blazer...

Striped pants and cutaway? Depending on the number of guests and the venue, the answer could run from khakis and a button down for a small party at home to a hazmat suit for a big crowd at Chucky Cheese. That blazer will get rumpled and stained at a typical 5 YO party.

Have you ever actually been at a 5-year-old's bday party? Hosted one? Were a 5-year-old yourself? JFC..,a tie, dress shoes, vest, blazer…I can’t think of worse advice for OP.
Geez, the guy just wants to wear his blazer to a party. Give him a little credit here. It sounds like he knows how to act like an adult so no, he doesn't need to dress like the kids. It's ok to be an adult...

Got it. Would love to see you climb into the hurl and piss-filled ball pit and drag your kid out while wearing your tie and French cuff shirt.

Who would let their children go into a mess like that? On the off chance, It sounds like something the Au Pair would do. If not, I'm reasonably sure the drycleaner could put things right...

Gentlemen, I don't post anymore but I've been around since the days of Cruiser, Silver Porsche, and Fosbergacct2000 and I (obviously) still check in from time to time.

Having stated my my bona fides and no longer able to continue to procrastinate starting my workday, I respectfully submit that someone may be having a bit of fun.

Back into hibernation I go. Best to all.

How are you expecting other parents to dress. If there are no other parents, then you should heed the advice of most here and dress for utility. If other adults will be there, wear any color casual pants (including jeans) except black. Shoes should go with belt and match level of casualness of pants. Patterned shirt and no tie. If no guests show up in a sports coat, take it off. As a host at a casual event I don’t think it is good to be the most formally dressed person as it can make your guests feel underdressed… like they missed the memo.

It sounds like this depends upon whether he wants to fit in with the rest of the crowd or set the standard. I say set the standard. I've already said someone is going to be the best dressed and it might as well be him. If dressing nicely somehow offends the rest of the crowd, it's the wrong crowd...

This is an interesting one, possibly terrifying. On one hand, I agree, dress very casual. I like jeans with a red or navy polo, a pair of low white chucks and a brown leather belt. Save your nice blazer from potential catastrophy. At 34, There is a chance that you may still be the best dressed. On the other hand, if you want to wear the blazer, I like a white or blue OCBD, tan or gray khakis or jeans, brown leather loafers with the same belt mentioned above. There is an even better chance that you may be the best dressed, but you may also be walking on a tight rope.
