Many years ago I bought a 3 piece suit at a great price but never wore the vest. Going through some stuff I found the vest (suit is long gone). I've read about people wearing vests and sweaters with high-rise trousers, in particular. I don't wear suits much, just odd trousers and jackets. I do like to wear braces so I've been thinking of trying vests and sweaters.

So how do you wear an odd vest? I assume you can wear it with jacket/trousers? Do you coordinate it like any other piece you wear?

Here's a couple of pictures. It's a heavy piece (suit was a heavy winter suit). Brownish grey with a subtle light blue check.

You know what's a great look? Layering a long sleeved cardigan, vest, and sport coat together. I had heard others here mention this look in the past and I always thought the cardigan/vest combo would be redundant. But if you're familiar with the long running British sitcom Last of the Summer Wine, the character of Clegg sports this combo and I think it looks fantastic. Very gentlemanly. I'm going to try it myself for the first time when Fall arrives. I like the layered look peeking through underneath the sport coat.

Distinguish the 2, long sleeve, not a vest but I get your drift. Either way a very country look which I emulate at times. The series ended here in the states about a decade or more ago, a prominent figure portrayed by a British actor by the the name of Frank Thornton (sp) of (" are you being served fame ). A quite enjoyable series, with many fine character actors. Another was all creatures great and small featuring many fine British actors and actresses. Sorely missed. My guess is that many have passed but the look continues thankfully.

To clarify, I meant an actual cardigan sweater, then the tweed vest/waistcoat on top of that sweater.
And I suppose it could get hot under all those layers. I'll give it a try when the cooler weather comes, and see how it works.

I would urge you not to wear it just with a shirt.

I'm not a waistcoat/best kind of guy, but I think with a tweed jacket it might work.
So maybe this combination, for example? Mid grey flannel trousers and brown tweed jacket. Pair with a light blue pinpoint or OCBD?

Or better with a navy worsted blazer?

No, I'd never try and combine a POW check with a navy blazer. This jacket its the better choice. And I'd try for a slightly intense shirt under it all, perhaps in a French blue or a pink/peach?

Okay I finally got around to trying something. I'd love to hear opinions. It is really cold today so I wore a heavy OCBD. Is the shirt fabric too heavy/casual for the vest? This is my first go at this so I'd like to know if I'm in the ballpark or not.
