I'm planning to spend some money on summer clothing since my closet is filled with winter stuff. What type of clothing should men (18-25) wear for the summer. I know there's the basic polo and shorts, but I find that a bit worn out. Any other ideas? Any contribution would be great!

I am 20 and I practically live in my sperry's boat shoes during the summer. They're great and pretty inexpensive too. Also I wear the typical shorts as you mentioned during the day along with a polo or a sports shirt with the sleeves rolled up.

Think Seersucker and cotton poplin...a suit/jacket or two, crafted of each. This past year I even got into sportshirts crafted of SS...great stuff! For your lower half, tropical twills and consider a pair of penny loafers or lightweight Venetians to augment your Sperry's.

All good suggestions. That being said the best Summer clothing to wear was purchased last Fall on closeout.

As you begin to purchase more seasonal clothing you'll find that your money goes so much further if you think ahead.

Best wishes and good luck,

Who said anything about socks with boat shoes?

127's advice is correct about seasonal shopping. However, I find summer deals can be had all year at Lands End. They have good deals on their polos and madras shirts. I think there's a 25% off right now going on. And...it looks like nobody has suggested madras yet. I'm a big fan, you can really feel the difference in the heat of summer if you have a madras shirt on. Get long sleeves and roll them up. Older BB ones can be found on ebay easily for $20.

I think somebody above mentioned it already and I'll second it but my tropical wool trousers are staples for me in the summer. I have a few dress pair and a couple sportier pairs that work well in and out of the office.

I also agree with the boat shoe suggestion. I have a pair of Rockport that I got about 4 years ago for maybe $20 and they have held up well with near daily use from May through September (though I did upgrade to a pair of Rancourts for this summer).

And I know many think they are over done, but I couldn't survive the warm weather without polo shirts.

Very good advice, and it will make the budget of a typical 18-25 year old go farther.

Gotcha. Yeah, I had my brother-in-law ask me last year if he could wear socks with his boat shoes.
So long as he's not wearing them with shorts, why does it matter?

I'd suggest wearing as much seersucker as possible. It is casual enough to wear the pants on a weekend, while a proper seersucker suit can be worn to the office or out on a date.

That said, I would also encourage you to look for line sports coats and get some decent chinos in tan, stone, British khaki and grey. A pair of chinos and a linen sportscoat can be worn practically everywhere.

I need more proper warm weather clothing. My only warm weather sport coat is madras. That's just not right!

I love seersucker! Although, what's with the darts on current seersucker jackets? That really messes up the stripes.

Suck it up and get some seersucker!

(Sorry, I couldn't resist.)
To each his own. I can't stand seersucker. It makes me feel like I'm auditioning for the chorus in The Music Man.

Beside the requisite shorts (10-11" inseams for a man of my height) I also favor pima cotton polo shirts with an unlined poplin coat and trousers over fisherman's sandals--worn without socks, of course. However, when the temperature exceeds 85, out come the aloha shirts and the coat goes back into the closet!

It gets to 110 to 120 in the high summer here.

At night, I will wear a polo/t-shirt and shorts. Its that hot. If I'm going to a bar/club with a dress code, I'll wear a polo and jeans and be miserable or hope they keep it freezing inside.

For business wear, I wear the least amount of clothing that is still acceptable. In most cases, that means a dress shirt and wool pants. I don't find that tropical weight keeps me any cooler than 3 season weight wool. Wool is cooler than cotton I've found and keeps the crease & shape.

The lightest weight cotton shirt is the best for staying cool outside, although inside they usually keep it freezing so I always bring a jacket just in case. I'd love to have some of that twisted yarn stuff, but its out of my price range. Seersucker would probably be inappropriate and honestly in 110 degree weather, it doesn't matter what you wear.
