Texture. Melton has a similar texture to boiled wool, soft and airy nap, despite being heavy and tightly woven. Moon's Duffel is much coarser, though not quite as coarse as the fabric used in a duffel coat. Never seen Moon Pinks at the local haber, but at that weight I'd imagine it's similar to a tight barathea

Thank you so much, I've been looking for this answer for a while.

What fabric do you think is best suited for a Balmacaan? Warmth and texture are the most important factors for me, coarseness more secondary.

Struggling to give the obvious answer - the Melton. One's imagination demands a Balmacaan be made of the Tweediest of tweeds, a plush one feels somehow wrong (though I suspect it would meet your needs quite well). Perhaps wait for someone to weigh in on the Hunting Pink, it seems the sort of thing that would suit such a coat.

I was leaning towards the Melton as well.

Whenever this gets made up(not any time soon!), I'll likely just sample all 3 to figure it out. Thanks for the initial guidance.
