Greetings,

I would really appreciate if someone out there could answer this question.

In some American fiction (Faulkner comes to mind), especially in works set before World War II, you occasionally see clothing made of serge mentioned. However, I never see it mentioned today, nor have I ever seen a garment described or listed as made of serge. What is serge? Is it simply an archaic name for a fabric that we still use today but call something else? If so, what is the current name? Or is it a fabric that is no longer used? If so, why did it fall into disuse?

Thank you very much in advance.

Best Regards,
Tony
