I'm starting to shop for a new one, so I thought I'd ask folks here what traits they look for in a new motorcar themselves.

I voted for price because, well, that's what's important to me at the moment. I bought a $300 subaru when I moved up to AK because I know I'll be moving back to the lower 48 in a year, and because the whole purpose of coming up here was to save up money.

I expect that priority to change drastically in the coming years, shifting toward safety and reliability if I have a family.

Don't buy more than you can afford.

The wisest words I've heard are to buy what you love, because it will need work eventually and you won't mind as much if you love the car.

For me that means nimble handling and three pedals. I've owned German cars, and abandoned their extensive expensive upkeep. Of course if you just want a driving appliance, there's always the Camry.

Have you heard of a Volvo? Buy one. The new S80s are beautiful. But you might want to wait for the new S60s, out sometime next year. I'll be trading in my S60 then for a new one.

You're right, Pentheos, safety is an important consideration when buying a car--I wish I could modify the poll!

Sure I've heard of Volvos--didn't somebody drive a million miles on one?

I guess it depends on what one wants out of a car as to what one would look for. In my case I really couldn't find one car that met all my needs/desires, so I bought two.

My daily driver is a 2007 Nissan Altima 2.5s. It gives me the four door sedan with good gas mileage that I needed and is fairly quick and reasonably fun to drive in addition to a pretty good safety rating. It has met all of my expectations.

My other car is a 2007 Mustang convertible. I wanted a reasonably inexpensive weekend toy that had a top I could put down. It's just a bare bones six cylinder, but there is an Eaton Supercharger in it's near future that will push it to about 320 hp which should be enough to satisfy any go fast desires I have. The only things I was specifically looking for in this car was a convertible top at a low price and a good aftermarket to build it to my desires, not the automakers.

Cute advertisement. Should I honestly believe the Renault Twingo is a safer car than a Lexus LS or Mercedes S-Class?

They forgot to include a plate of fish and chips (Bentley- Rolls Royce) and a nice helping of meatballs (Maserati) in the crash test.

Price, reliability, mileage, comfort, and safety, all about equally. I'll roll them into one category called "utility."

To me, a car gets me around. It's a tool. If you want a car that's fun to drive, that's great, but if performance or looks compromises any of the above categories, then to me it's not a tool anymore, but a toy.
