A relative informed me that he Is getting married in August in my home state of Michigan. I have yet to confirm, but assume that it will be late afternoon/ evening and not white/ black tie. Most of my family is the typical Midwest blue collar non- suit wearing type, so no morning or evening dress.

That being said, my suit options are charcoal, navy pinstripe and potentially a brown check (buying a new custom) and tan linen. I might pull the trigger on a navy blazer from Brooks Brothers. I have only been to six weddings in the last 20 or so years, and most of time I wore my dress blues uniform. Would tan linen be appreciate, or this pinstripe suit?

From the most recent weddings and funerals I've been to I suspect the linen suit will be fine. Naturally, you can try to get more information from your relative.

There are many hereabouts who argue that pinstripes are not appropriate for this kind of event because the pinstripes carry the connotation of business. I think the suit looks great, and I doubt that your non-suit-wearing relatives will draw that inference from seeing you wear a nice pinstripe suit.

“I’d say dress nice however you want it to be. I guess a tie and jacket would be appropriate, we just wanna have a good time overall.”

-This sounds on the less formal side, does anyone agree?

From the Midwestern blue-collar weddings I've been to, I think the linen suit will work best. Anything else you listed might be too formal/business. My guess is most of the male guests with wear a shirt and tie with slacks, no jacket.

Excellent point. I might opt for a bow tie or a cotton tie, possible with suede loafers.

Well, I'm a suit guy. I have business suits I wear four days per week and tweed suits I wear during my three-day weekends - at least in tweed weather. But, if you get that Brooks Brothers Blazer, that might be a good choice. Perhaps with tan or light grey trousers. If I wear something other than a suit, it's usually the double-breasted Country Club Blazer I'm wearing in my profile picture here. In the profile pic, I'm wearing one of those BB merino turtleneck sweaters, but for a wedding I'd wear a shirt and tie. I'm not the kind of guy to whom people generally pay compliments, but when it happens it's more likely for the BB DB blazer than anything else...

Tan linen if the wedding isn’t at night. It will still be summer. Probably still be hot in Michigan. Seems like a great opportunity for tan linen.

I’m really on tan linen at the moment. It’s going to be my next suit purchase.

It's at a time like this when the underrated solid navy cotton seersucker suit is your friend. That it is a suit and that it is dark blue will mean you'll be dressed appropriately considering the significance of the social function. That it is made of cotton seersucker will prevent you from looking severe considering the weather, what the other guests will likely be wearing, and the overall ambience at that particular gathering.

A navy blazer and gray or tan wool trousers? Not bad. A tan linen suit? Possibly, if you can face the possibility of standing out.

The under-appreciated solid navy cotton seersucker suit? The answer to many a spring and summer sartorial dilemma.

You'll need to have it made to order, though.

At a non-formal warm-weather wedding, wear it with a white shirt and cotton or slubby silk necktie. At a relative's high school or college graduation, wear it with a light blue shirt and no tie.

Having said all this, I am reasonably confident you won't be shunned if you wear the navy pinstriped number. Your Aunt Martha might needle you, but you know her--she's always been somewhat annoying.

Another excellent point. The BB blazer I want to get is the half lined one. I have just the trousers to go with it too.

The last summer mid day wedding the wife and I attended, I wore a light khaki hued cotton poplin suit and I can't recall hearing any complaints. However I did receive a few compliments! ;)

In Michigan, almost no one wears seersucker suits (if they even wear suits any more.) I can see a linen suit for a summer wedding and there is nothing wrong with the faintly pinstriped suit that the OP modeled. You can wear seersucker in Michigan, but you will stand out.

I wore a cream colored cotton suit to the last summer wedding I attended. Quite appropriate for the weather and venue. I like lighter colored suits in the middle of the summer. The blue pinstripe looks nice but a slightly more casual fabric may end up being more in line with what other guests are wearing.

Do you really think so? Even the solid navy seersucker that Charles is recommending? Frankly, given the crowd described I doubt anyone will even appreciate it is seersucker. I agree with Charles that if the weather is expected to be warm a solid navy seersucker suit is a splendid choice.

Solid navy blue? In August? At a wedding?

I'm not recommending something with baby-blue and white stripes.

I hardly ever see striped seersucker suits in the San Francisco area, but last summer I saw a guest at a wedding in the Napa Valley; he was wearing a navy seersucker suit. He looked perfectly appropriate.
